“…Sometimes I still wake up like this in the middle of the night and forget,” he admits, his voice still a soft whisper in the dark. “I forget where I am, like I just borrowed this life, waiting for something to go wrong. But then I feel you against me, like this.”
There’s another subtle movement as he carefully tightens his hold. “I can feel your warmth, the sheets, and your heartbeat, and it hits me over and over again that you’re real. That this is real.”
It’s like he’s repeating the words to reassure the doubts in his head. You feel the urge just to open your eyes and kiss those insecurities away again, but he continues to whisper.
“I can’t explain it yet but… loving you feels like- like standing in the sunlight after living underground for years, and my body keeps waiting for someone to tell me I’m not allowed to stay, but you let me,” he breathes. “You choose me, even when I don’t know how to choose myself.”
As Caleb's hybrid dog past finally comes to light, you both finally have to face everything he can no longer run from.

“Caleb,” you say, alarmed. He slides a palm over your scent gland, his fingers sending sparks through the sensitive surface. His pupils are blown wide and he’s breathing eagerly through his nose as he gazes at you.
“It’s okay, Pipsqueak.” His voice is rough and tinged with excited desperation. Your heart rate picks up until you can feel your arteries thrumming in your neck and wrists. “This is normal. This is good.”
It doesn’t feel good, it feels like dying, like the ancient fear you only ever uncover during close calls with Wanderers. “I don’t understand--” you croak, your voice fizzling into a choked groan. “What did you do to me?”
Since learning you’re an omega two years ago, you’ve been on the run. Now, Caleb has caught you, and in your forced proximity the lines of your relationship and your own desires blur. Have you always wanted him like this?

You watch the radiance of his necklace shift as he moves, his silver dog tag still catching light as the red gem glows like a soft heartbeat. He follows your stare while moving to brush his fingers over the pendant thoughtfully.
“I kept holding it last night,” he admits quietly. “It helps me. Reminds me of you.”
You swallow, suddenly getting warmer at his confession.
“I’m glad you like it,” you whisper.
“I don’t just like it,” he continues with the same sincerity. “It just feels… important.” He hesitates, searching for the right words. “Like something that keeps me here. Like I’m where I belong, right by your side.”
After offering Caleb, a runaway dog hybrid, a place to live, he becomes much more than just a roommate.
