Summary
This is part of an ongoing series: CHARON'S OBOL; this is chapter one of FRAGMENTS OF KIRKWALL, set during the events of DA:II.
The aim of this series is to write a better character arc for one Cullen Rutherford, who, despite a confusing amount of fandom love, has an arc across three games that isn't wholly coherent or consistent. Parts of this series may appear with other POV characters, and usually will be written within the context of a specific quest or part of the game in question's arc.
Finally, this series is written with a female circle mage Grey Warden, Iðunn Amell. An additional OC, Ser Griseldis of Starkhaven and Kirkwall, also plays a large role in the entries to this series.

Summary
Cullen Rutherford's worst enemy and greatest asset is his own mind. Addicted to lyrium and dangerously, stupidly in love with the Herald of Andraste, it has sometimes tortured him, but it has always gotten him through. Until now. Haven is on fire, a demigod is stalking them, the Inquisition's war is about to kick off, and all he has to keep himself sane is a beat up old journal.

Summary
“I’m keeping you safe,” Cullen said, his voice rough, and she licked her lips.
“Safety means nothing without freedom,” Solona shot back, her own voice trembling with emotion. Seemingly unconsciously, she leaned closer to him.
“And freedom means nothing if you get this circle annulled,” he replied. He had the sense that neither of them was paying any attention to the conversation.
