It's not because the story has a lot of muddy parts that Grian does not remember some of it as distinctly as stones standing above the tepid water. He knows where he comes from. He's a Watcher of the Steep clan. His exile and his arrival to Hermicraft do not change what he is.

Scar can’t answer, too busy trying to control his breathing. It was Grian who had helped him build their home in the desert. It was Grian who had chosen to stay by his side, even after he didn’t have to anymore. It was Grian who had sat on the mountain with him, pointing out the stars and naming them.
It was Grian who had looked at him when they were the only two left, and had said there had to be a winner. It was Grian who had led him back to their mountain, hand in hand, and beat him to death in the shifting sands.
Grian remembered none of it.
OR,

Grian groaned, dropping his head against the back of his couch. “This is such bullshit.”
“You got shot.” Grian tilted his head to pout at Impulse. “There was no way they were gonna let you work a shift.” Impulse gave him a pointed look as he glanced through his fridge. “That means no sneaking out for– why do you have no food?”
“I have food!” Grian said indignantly. “There’s plenty of food in there!”
“There’s a single box of leftover chicken wings and a bottle of Dr. Pepper.”
Grian stared blankly at Impulse. Eventually, Impulse shook his head and shut the fridge.

Summary
