Hopper sighed out, “Getting used to getting your face beat in is not something that you should have ever had to deal with. You or Robin.”
“Oh no, it’s really okay, Hop, I swear. It’s like, kind of my job, ya know?”
“I’m sorry?” Hopper spoke up, looking at Steve’s face like he thought he may have misheard. The rest of the crew also turned to look at Steve with confusion on their faces.
Or
Steve doesn’t realize that his friends didn’t know about what happened in the underground Russian base and everything spills out when Hopper mentions his time in a Russian prison.

Summary
Steve Harrington is pulled into the Upside Down and spends a year alone, fighting to survive. But soon Will Byers joins him, but he isn't the last.
Eventually, the whole party accidentally find themselves trapped in the Upside Down, and it is up to Steve to help them protect themselves.
OR Steve and the whole party get trapped in the Upside Down. Steve, along with his nail bat, becomes leader and gifts each party member a weapon to defend themselves.
