    Summary

“Bring him,” Aerion commanded again, his words breaking at their edges. “Bring him now.

The maester hesitated for the span of a fractured heartbeat, for Ser Duncan was in the city, far beyond the castle walls. Aerion saw it, and his eyes flared near incandescently.

“If you dare remain idle whilst I bleed upon this accursed bed I swear by all that yet remains of my line that I shall have your heads when this is done.”

Aerion gives birth to his first child with the Captain of the Gold Cloaks. It is not an easy endeavor.

    Summary

Strong were the lungs of Maegor, and tireless. Within the first sennight of his life, he had established a tyranny over the Red Keep; servants crept about corridors with anxious eyes and noble ladies who had once begged for a glimpse of the prince now contrived polite excuses to shorten their visits. The babe wailed at the light, at the dark, at hunger, at fullness, at swaddling and at freedom alike.

He had survived his birth. Aerion, in truth, had scarcely done so.

Sleepless and recovering from his labors, Aerion tends to the fussiest babe of the realm and tries not to think of a certain knight’s absence.

    Summary

"Other than a few small fractures in the skull, there is nothing wrong with you, Your Majesty," said the maester as he removed the bandage from Baelor’s head. "For the next few months you may have occasional headaches, but there will be no permanent symptom."

"You see, brother," Baelor said with a chuckle. "I told you it was just a scratch."

Maekar frowned, yet the obvious relief on his face could not be hidden. "Are you truly certain?" he asked the maester. "Head injuries cannot be taken lightly."

"There is truly nothing serious, my prince," Maester Yormwell assured him. "Only..."

"Only what?" Maekar asked, his hand trembling.

"Prince Baelor has lost a portion of his scalp, so hair will never grow in that area again."

A heavy silence fell over the room.

"I take back everything I said, brother," Baelor said. "I will never forgive you."

    Summary

Maekar brings his hand up to crack an open palm against the side of Daeron’s head. “And you did nothing as your brother was kidnapped? You did not think to follow them and get your brother back? To ride to Ashford Castle? To get me and tell me immediately?” His voice cracks on that last word. His eleven year old, kidnapped by a giant man, and his eldest had stood idly by. Daeron lets out a whine at the pain, which would normally make his father soften. Maekar knows his eldest son is touched in the head. Knows that he babbles about awful dreams, some of which come to pass. But this is a terrible, terrible offense on their house. He doesn’t take that lightly.

Daeron is found drunk at the inn by a very angry Maekar. Maekar gives Daeron a very memorable lesson on what happens to eldest sons who shirk their resposibilities.

    Summary

"Have you ever slain a man, nephew?" his uncle had asked him, that last time they had spoken.

Reaching down, he splayed a hand over Daeron's cup and slid it across the table. That was unkind of him, Daeron would reflect later. It was the only cup he’d managed to sneak past his father.
