“Well, then,” Snotlout said quickly. Fishlegs looked ready to unleash a barrage of questions, whereas Astrid looked like she was about to start drilling him for answers. With a mace. Time to make a hasty escape.

“I’m going to find Hiccup,” he said. “He must be tiny right now, right? That’s crazy. How old you are guys anyway? Fifteen?”

“Fourteen,” Astrid corrected, eyes narrowing even further.

The twins faltered. They stared at him. Even several villagers, who were hovering too-near to him (especially after the orders Stoick had issued the adults, to stay away from Snotlout, to respect tradition and not ask him pressing questions) seemed confused.

“What’d you want Hiccup for?” Ruffnut said.

“Tiny right now?” Fishlegs quoted. Snotlout silently cursed the boy’s perceptiveness, cursed the same intelligence that would later become vital to the village. “Does that mean… he’s not tiny anymore?”

He’s only kissed Kagome twice before: once in the Meido, and once when she first returned. Since then, he’s been hesitant to make a move, for fear that she was caught up in the moments before, whereas now?

Now they’re living, like really living.
    Every day. Simple. Domestic. Together.

Like before, when they hunted the Shikon no Tama.

“Sango helped me make it,” he says, voice trembling. “ And it—it’s to tell you how much I love you,” he continues weakly.

Kagome’s turning it this way and that, holding it up against the last rays of the sun. She’s frowning as she inspects it, and Inuyasha’s heart begins to pound.

“You don’t like it,” he says, a bit desperate.

“Inuyasha!” Kagome answers sharply, but her face is still soft. “I love it,” she answers him, much more quietly. “It’s the beautiful, most perfect thing ever.”

She looked up to at the Nadder, fully expecting it to be fully prepared to eat her for her unsatisfactory offering, or to have run off entirely.

It was still standing there, fidgeting slightly, staring at her with a hopeful look in its golden eyes.

What did it want her to do?

And then she heard laughter coming from behind her.

Astrid whipped her head in the direction of the ridicule. And saw two black figures stepping out of the bushes.

The rider was laughing at her.

    HICCUP was laughing at her.

    She was gonna kill him.

“Oh, is this bringing back memories,” he said in between his chuckles, “ this is not what I was expecting to find when I got here.”

    Summary

"Exile still seems the best option, Stoick..."

Stoick should have known better. While he didn't know much about his son-especially now-he knew the boy was clever. It should have been no surprise when a guard burst into the Council Meeting and revealed that Hiccup had escaped the cell Stoick put him in...hours after the boy was revealed to have saddled a dragon.

Hiccup is gone, and so is the beast.

They search, but do not find him. Berk falls asleep one night and awakens in the Great Hall, where the torches come to life and cast an image of their isle on the wall, from which floats Hiccup's voice, years younger.

AKA, Hiccup forfeited the final challenge, leaving Astrid with the right to kill the Nightmare. Story picks up in the Race to the Edge era, except Berk never learned the truth of dragons, no one knows how Hiccup really lost his leg, and stories of a hooded 'vigilante' riding a Night Fury have been long whispered...and Berk will see it all unfold.

Stoick the Vast and Berk watch How to Train Your Dragon...and beyond.

Johann leans down, suddenly seizing the boy by the shoulders.

Johann: “They drew me aboard, Master Hiccup. They had questions.”

    “What? Questions?” Spitelout repeats.

    Hiccup: “Johann, who—”

Johann: “There were two men looking for word of a boy. A small lad named Hiccup, brown of hair and with eyes of ivy, newly missing his left leg and riding a—”

Hiccup steps suddenly out of Johann’s hold.

(Stoick exhales shakily. What had happened on this day? It sounded like…almost as if Johann knew —)

Hiccup: “It sounds like you were attacked by pirates. You should…you should tell my…or…don’t—or—”

    Johann studies him gravely.

Johann: “Master Hiccup, you were two-legged when I last had the pleasure of Berk’s hospitality.”

    (“Thor.” Gobber whispers. “Johann knew.”

(“No.” Stoick denies slowly. “That doesn’t make—”)

    Hiccup: “I—I…don’t—you…uh…”

Johann: “They said you rode a Night Fury.”
