Oh, this is lovely and tender and measured, and has something of Sutcliff in the descriptions. I have long been an Alexios/Cunorix shipper, and for me Alexios/Hilarion only works if they recognize and honor the close friendship between Alexios and Cunorix, before things went bad - and this encapsulates this feeling perfectly. Really well done!

This is amazing! I'm so impressed how you've both written a moving story that fits very well with the themes of the game, and also written and illustrated it in the style of the game to make its own fangame! The monster asserting that he is a person echoes the serfs asserted that they are people. Then the monster being recognized and aided by each of the peoples of the tower, just as the serfs were. It really emphasizes how each culture first sees the others as other, then, as they communicate, accept them as human and as brother. Really well done!

Pwyll is fighting for his life on a disastrous team-bonding trip that he organised. Frustrated by his team and lost in the woods on a rainy winter day, the last thing he expects is to run into a man who claims to be Arawn, the legendary prince of the Welsh otherworld Annwn. Well, actually, maybe the last thing Pwyll expects is to be transported to said otherworld to learn lessons about leadership from Arawn's wife.

Either way, it's shaping up to be a weird day!

This was great. I actually know nothing about the Mabinogion (in fact I was expecting something else, because I was confusing it in my mind with Y Gododdin) but I love faerie-world-switcheroos, especially lighthearted ones like this. I grinned at Eluned rescuing Pwyll, and at him trying to explain that he had both men and women on his staff (and one person who's neither), and at Arawn guessing that lack of "phone signal" might be a good excuse. Well done, I enjoyed this a lot!

Aha, this is great. I love the way you wove the various encryptions (past and present) through the story, like, nothing is ever straightforward with these people. (Though honestly I would drive myself bonkers if I had to figure out anagrams in my head. It still took me a moment to decipher the punchline, and that was short!) I also liked the way things started prosaically and then took a sharp left at Albuquerque with “We staked her through the heart,” she whispered. Lots of fun, well done!

A/N: I did not read Tomb of the Dragons before writing this. Shockingly, some parts of this fic are so thematically in tune with TOTD that I was extremely pleased and surprised. Some parts, of course, are no longer canonical. C'est la vie.

I never get tired of Tomasaran stories! I really liked seeing her coming into her own and making connections with people, and the casefic part was a lot of fun. The idea of a store-room where "gifts the Emperor dislikes but can't refuse" are kept made me grin. I had somewhat forgotten Rohethar, Ormevar, and Parmorin but they were great supporting characters here.

I enjoyed this a lot! It draws on Laura's rescue of Freddie, but is its own thing; Pim's madness and despair are not the same as Freddie's (and she takes her own steps toward her rescue!), and of course Laura's feelings for them are different as well. The language is very like that of the book, slow and descriptive but never overwrought, and of course the structure of alternating POVs echoes the book but takes the characters to different places, real and figurative.

(Also I love that Winter is the one to tell Laura she needs to go, and that they both see ghosts but Freddie doesn't, and that of course Faland's hotel isn't in Belgium: “He is bigger than that. Wider. Older—much older. I think it’s everywhere.”)

ON THE FRINGES OF GRANDYOSA, NERVOUS BUT EAGER STAFF AWAIT LIFTOFF

    By NewsBot449, JournoAI

It’s a tale as old as humanity itself: young people leaving their homes and families, forging into the unknown in search of themselves, of adventure, of a better life.

Such is the story written on the faces—many of them adolescent—of the veritable army of staffers hired to serve the elite passengers of the Grandyosa, Oxygenysis' massive new space cruiser, which will be making its maiden voyage on the "Grand Tour" of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. There’s a palpable tension in the air as the staffers hurry from one training station to the next, putting the finishing touches on the protocols that have been drilled into their heads for the past six months.

“We have to be flawless,” explains one young woman, Abilene (last name withheld for privacy reasons). “One passenger complaint, and Oxygenysis will put us on the first shuttle home.”

the massive expedition featuring unprecedented cooperation between multiple countries including India, Texas, Mexico, California, New England, and Oregowashington on Earth, and the countries of Elon and Barron on Mars

    I snorted!

“We look forward to working with them further,” said Marcus. “It shouldn’t take long to learn just how advanced their civilization is.”

Now that has the feel of foreshadowing...

    ...OH.

This was really fabulous - all the pointed satire of corporations and the way the US and the rest of our planet seems to be going, the surprise of the aliens (in a completely different way than I expected!), the triumph of good people (not necessarily human) over evil corporations. Well done, I enjoyed this a lot!

What a magnificent piece of worlds-building this is, a mash-up of space opera and bodice ripper and arr, SPACE PIRATES! I love the found-document structure; at first I was thinking, "Oh, just scattered bits and pieces from the different worlds depicted on the posters," but the story quickly emerged and riveted me.

I particularly like how elements recur (the fancy menu, and then the handwritten one), and how the theme of the robber-barons exploiting the working class is raised early and - well, not exactly subtly, with that vocabulary choice, but it isn't clear that it's going to be as important as it is until suddenly and literally, BOOM. I also loved Amelia slowly opening her eyes to her place and her fate and her choices, and the adorable courtship (like everyone else, "keeps calling me princess" cracked me up), and yay a happy ending for the people we want a happy ending for! Well done, I really loved this!

What a great bit of worldbuilding, and it slots so neatly into the weird world of the Presger Translators! I love the slow, gentle way it unfolds, Qven's impatience and curiosity, Teacher's careful explanations amid the matter-of-fact horror that underlies this world. I also love that you've leaned into the absurd humor that's intrinsic to aliens learning how to pretend to be human-ish - Kzane complaining that they have to pretend tea is lovely when it tastes like wet leaves, and they have to wear gloves on their feet, and "We don't eat people here."

“Am I a fish?” you asked, suddenly. “Did you ‘collect’ me?”

“You are more a fish than you are a potato,” we said, deflecting from the directness of the question, but you would not be deterred.

“Am I one of the ones you could save?”

All the aww for this. And all the awe for your skill - you've simultaneously made them very alien, and very human. Well done!

This is magnificent. You've pulled out all the bits of LotR that really would appeal to Avi, all the things that would resonate in this future (his seeing a parallel to the Elves and the Ents slays me - of course the way the kids of Gaea were raised they would expect that everyone would want to take revenge) as well as highlight how Tolkien's words stir something in the minds of all of us, how powerful they are. It's affecting, but also? Hilarious.

The picture was stylized and simplified, but anyone could tell what it was supposed to represent (unlike, say, the icon for Save, which for some reason was a weird little square with one corner cut off and two mysterious smaller rectangles inside).

Ahahaha the enduring mystery! And you slid it in here quite naturally, good job - made me grin!

Seriously, he may as well have pulled a magic sword out of the planetoid’s stone

Another perfect reference, and then: Mightier than the sword Hee!

And then of course Avi imagines his Avi-Sue doing all the things the characters should have done. Relatable! But of course he is more Gollum than Boromir, at least in the first part of the book.

And the ending was perfect - nail, hammer, BANG. Well done!

    Bookmarker's Notes

What a fantastic story! I love the sort of casual character voices, the friendly bickering between Eḫli-Nikkal and Mastigga, the queen's philosophical, "well, last time he called me whore, things are looking up, right?" - there's this "speaking forsoothly" style of historical fiction that always seems a bit much to me, so I always enjoy when ancient kings and queens are depicted as "us, but their problems affect everyone else, too."

Not bothering to call an attendant, she stepped behind the mardatum – an elaborately woven screen

I should have noticed the arras being, uh, hung on the wall, so to speak, but I didn't twig until the Polonius scene, well done! I also smiled at Sleep. Dream. Something with teeth and too many legs floating above his bed. Go away, go away, go away. Aye, there's the rub! Seriously, I really loved that there were obvious parallels and a few call-outs, but nothing too much on the nose (other than Laertes, which, well, having read the notes I see why you did it).

In fact I super enjoyed that you didn't feel obliged to follow the entire arc of Hamlet - that Sardiya only entertained the notion of throwing herself into the river but didn't actually do it (she seems much more grounded than Ophelia!) - and that the treachery of a fickle woman was indeed involved, even if it wasn't the fickle woman we were expecting. I was also tickled by the sword - late Bronze Age, indeed! Really well done, a fabulous and captivating story - I loved it a lot!
