   Summary

   Following the violent suicide of her father in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929, and in search of an escape to the simplicity she knew as a child in rural Virginia, Alice Ostergaard comes to Franklin County by herself to revive an abandoned family home. There she meets the Bondurant boys, and attracts the attention of the middle brother.
