After the Cowpers catch Cressida and Eloise in a compromising position, Cressida is mysteriously absent from school—completely missing. Eloise’s fevered imagination invents all sorts of drastic punishments Cressida may be suffering for their indiscretion. She feels responsible, goes to reassure herself that Cress is okay, and encounters surreal and disturbing circumstances. Are the Cowpers not just cruel controlling parents but actually evil ghouls?
