“You’re damn right it is.”
John opened the Manila file folder and began flipping through. There had to be at least ten pages here, all filled with various text and details, even some charts too. He skimmed the titles but didn’t bother to read further than that.
“Seriously, Kaz, this isn’t like some high stakes investigation here. I think you’re overreacting,” said John, “how hard can it be?”
“Boss, if there’s one thing I’ve learned after all these years, it’s that you’re a terrible liar and an even worse actor. We need to be prepared for every possible contingency,” Kaz replied. “Which means you need to read those briefing files.”

As he tries to gather himself, a policeman walks in. They explain that he was found on the outskirts of city in the dock. The policeman wants to know who he is and how he got there. They also want to know why they’d found him in clothes that were covered in blood.
They tell him his name is Niccolo.
Niccolo would like to know the answers to the policeman’s questions as well.

Summary
Miller took off his hat and shrugged out of his jacket, folding it over his arm, and woah, that’s a robot arm. Technically, it was a high end prosthesis, complete with articulated fingers and carbon fiber plating shaped like well defined muscles. It would have looked comical, like the fake foam muscles on a cheap Halloween costume, except that under his tank top Miller’s real arm was just as shredded. With his aviators, broad shoulders, and gleaming silver arm, he looked straight out of a comic book, some kind of limited run crossover event between Cable and Duke Nukem.
“And this must be your rescued engineer. Your name’s Emmerich, right?” He smiled charmingly, and oh, wow. Hal really wanted to know what he looked like under those glasses.

Nicolò looks sheepish. "I killed you yesterday, and you awoke at the same time, the same place. But when I die, I wake at different times, different places. This bolt," he tosses it to Yusuf and it lands in the dirt by his knee, "it killed me yesterday, but I woke up many years from now. I lived several lifetimes in those places before returning here and pulling it from my neck."
Nicky's lives and deaths are different. He is unstuck from time - at every death he revives into a different point in his life. Each time he is struck down he wonders, will he awaken to deserts and swords? Will it be gunshots in cities? Joe and Nicky build a fractured life together, falling in love across two different sets of centuries, then patiently waiting for the other to fall in love too. He meets the rest of their little family out of order, but they still build a family around Nicky's involuntary time-traveling.

This is an origin story of Joe and Nicky from their first encounter (first kill) to the events that brought them together and the events that led them to love. Lots of philosophical discussions, mutual pining, and angst. Not to give too much away, but this story accounts for their childhoods, what led them to the crusades, thoughts on sexuality, Nicky's origins as a sniper, Joe's history with his necklace, and meeting Andy and Quynh, among other things.
