Their parents might be dragging them along for the change, but Steve and Max figure out the step-sibling thing on their own for the most part.

Summary
Max knows that it will be hard to get Steve to forget about her. She knows that he is the type of person to give up everything for someone who doesn’t give him anything in return. But she also knows he is busy: she knows Dustin isn’t the same since Starcourt, that Robin is the partner in crime he always needed, that his job is time-consuming and his parents are still traveling and the Russians messed up his head so he can’t move without wincing.
She thinks that between all of the people he has to care for, all of the things he has to take care of, she thinks maybe she can slip through the cracks. If she really tries. If she crafts it just right.
She’s too optimistic.

She remembers the stench of alcohol as she stepped through the door. She was already used to it by then. She remembers the specific creaky floorboard she almost stepped on while tip-toeing to her room, holding her shoes so their spot by the door wouldn’t alert Neil that she was home. She remembers it was a Tuesday, and she had an essay for English to put off doing.

Steve squeezes Robin’s hand, and Robin looks at him wildly. He’s so fucking calm, why is he so calm? She wants to shake him. She wants to sob into his shoulder.
“I need you to find Max,” he tells her slowly, and then he adds, “the redhead,” as if the kid hasn’t visited Steve enough at work for Robin to know her name.
“I need you to find her,” Steve repeats. “I need you to make sure she’s okay, Robin. Tell her I’ll call her as soon as I can, tell her it’s gonna be okay. Please."
