Nate sprung into action instantly, spurred forward by some kind of sociopathic bloodlust that glimmered insanely in his dark blue eyes. He grappled onto Ocean’s head and pressed her face down against the dirt-covered cement. She scraped her nose.
“Hold her down,” Nate said.
“No!” Ocean cried, but she was still too winded to speak properly, so it just came out as a malformed wheezing sound.

Noel wondered what would have happened if he hadn’t been driving that day.
It was a damp Thursday, late in the evening. The dark sky was clear and full of countless silver stars across the horizon. Noel was driving home from a night shift at Taco Bell, and the street he was on was mostly empty—aside from the person perched on the bridge railing, that is.
Call it rude, but Noel was just planning on passing right by. This person, whoever they were, was NOT his problem, he wasn’t equipped to deal with someone who was potentially about to end their life, AND he had homework he had to do at home.
But then, as the car was zipping by, he noticed the flash of unmistakable red outside the window, and suddenly he was slamming on the brakes, which nearly made him crack his skull open on the steering wheel.
Noel threw the car in reverse and began backing up. Once he got close enough, what he thought he had seen was confirmed.
It was Ocean.
