It's size alone was terrifying enough. But as she took in the smoke-hues of its thick, shaggy pelt, ranging from a deep, almost night black closest to its body to pale, almost silvery shimmers that patterned its forehead, down through its dense, thick ruff and along its back to its lazily swinging tail, she knew without a doubt what it, what he was.
He was far more than an ordinary beast.
The sacred patterns stamped in the contrasting shadow and moon-pale fur on his brow more than made that clear.
He was a Sentinel.
A sacred guardian. A keeper of the night and a protector of the living and dead alike.
Charged by the Great Spirits to protect and defend balance and life.
But also omen as much as a comfort: Sentinels, particularly the wolf-born, were bringers of death, vengeance and destruction.
Dread pooled, icy and paralyzing, in the pit pf her stomach.
She feared she knew precisely what his appearance before her heralded.
Only to jerk back, falling from her crouch next to the bloodweed scrub as he stepped carefully forward.
And dropped a freshly-killed rabbit, young and plump, just out of arms reach.
