Summary
Hecate Hardbroom is a spinster maiden aunt who has been left in charge of her rakish brother’s brood of illegitimate children upon his death. What she lacks in maternal instinct, she more than makes up for in her dogged desire to see that each and every girl in her charge receives a top education - so much so that she takes their studies into her own hands to see that it’s done properly. But soon, growing troubles with the estate pull her from the schoolroom and she finds herself fighting to protect the girls from utter destitution. Overwhelmed, she finds it necessary to engage a governess.
Requirements? Formidable. Bluenosed. Disinclined to wear pink.
Pippa Pentangle is none of those things. But she’s here to stay, and Hecate finds there’s little she can do about it.
