Summary
They come in the dead of night.
It shouldn’t have been as unexpected as it was. The suitors have grown bold in their restlessness over the past few months. Their talks have turned to thinly veiled threats, actions a hand away from harm, and eyes burning with a loathing that would make the dead shiver.
The calm before the storm should have set alarm bells in Telemachus’ mind. In Penelope’s. Or hell, even some of the guards. The way that the suitors, but especially Antinous, seemed to be in high spirits the past month should have alerted them to some sort of plotting. They had held back, suspiciously so, from their usual haunts and taunts, giving Telemachus and Penelope room to breathe for once.
They should have known something was up. But with the past twenty years of waiting, tense and worrisome, the reprieve had been welcomed, not questioned.
They forgone looking the gift horse in the mouth and now it was snapping its rotting teeth at them.

He could always go out and fetch Dean a bulging bag of junk, and Dean would always be softer and more sedate when they were done; his hair trigger safely adjusted, his rough edge dulled. Sam desperately needed to eat with him sometimes, to keep his eyes locked on Dean’s throat muscles as they worked and to taste the same stuff Dean was tasting, like they were kids and Sam didn’t have much choice in the matter, but neither did Dean.
