Summary
This fic is an alternate ending (major character death) to Built to Break. It begins in Chapter 18, in the OR, when surgeons discover Shane’s Ewing sarcoma cannot be fully removed. Clean margins aren’t possible, and the goal shifts from cure to comfort.
What follows is the story of his final year— intentional, painful, and deeply beautiful—and the love that carries him through it. But this story does not end when Shane does. It continues through the aftermath: the firsts, the grief, the anger, and the slow, stubborn choice to keep living a life he would be proud of. It’s about chosen family, about carrying someone forward, and about believing that love doesn’t end here.
If you’ve read Built to Break, you can start at Chapter 18. It also works as a standalone—though rereading from Chapter 1, knowing how it ends, might hit a little harder in the gut.

Summary
“Shane, what is wrong?” Ilya continued after a few more moments. “Please tell me.”
“I….” Shane hiccuped. “I…just…really…fucking…. missed…you.”
He felt Ilya's body shake with laughter then and Shane’s face scrunched up indignantly.
“Don’t…laugh…at…me.” He cried through each word. He knew he sounded crazy, but he also didn’t really have a lot of control over it at the moment— his hormones were just too wild for him to handle right now.
“Oh sweetheart.” Ilya eased him back so they could look at each other, and if Shane had been in a right state of mind, he might have thought to wipe away the tears and snot. But he didn’t, instead snivelling all pathetically in his husband's arms. “I missed you so much too.”
or
Ilya has been on the road with the team for far longer than Shane, who is almost 9 months pregnant, is able to stand. So he does something about it.

Summary
“You’re starting to sound like him,” said Hunter.
Shane thought… if Hunter knew… he had had years to out them. He had been in the room next to Ilya’s. But he had never said anything. Feeling numb, terrified, Shane said, “I’m sorry, what?”
“You fucking heard me, Hollander.” Hunter’s face was so angry. Shane saw the truth, the threat, in the man’s face.
He was on a mic. He was mic’d. This would ruin Shane and Rozanov. He dropped his gloves without really thinking about it. He never dropped his gloves. Hunter couldn’t run his mouth without teeth. His teammates caught him and held him back. He chirped a lot, calling Hunter old and past it, hoping to distract him, get him to not say the worst thing he could possibly say. All Shane could hope for was a distraction.
When Hunter chirps at Shane while mic’d up for behind-the-scenes content, Shane feels sick. He knows his parents, Ilya and the world hear it, and he worries about the consequences.

Summary
Shane Hollander thought he’d retire a Metro.
Instead, he gets a phone call about cap space, strategic realignment, and how loyalty looks great in a press release but terrible on a spreadsheet.
Montreal trades him.
Ottawa waits with the porch light on.
Between a late-night highway drive, a captain with pale curls and a competitive streak a mile wide, and a press conference full of carefully polished lies, Shane discovers that maybe losing a franchise means finally finding a home.
Also, he is absolutely not getting first line centre without a fight.
