Damasen sighed and finally turned fully to Percy. “It takes most monsters decades or even centuries to reform after death,” the titan told him gently. “Often, it takes just as long, if not longer, to find a tear.”
It took all of Percy’s very limited strength to force his jaw to work through the shaking. “A tear, huh?”
“Little mortal—”
“The Minotaur went from dust to a pain in my ass again in less than four years.”
Damasen seemed to almost wilt. With impossible softness, he asked, “Do you think you can survive out there for four years? The drakon will offer you a quick and mostly painless death. Many who rove out there, many of whom have a vendetta against you personally, will not be so kind.”

And that only threw her back into heavy, heavy sobs, it taking several minutes of hearing Percy mutter apologies before she could get out, “Don’t apologize to me.”
He just kept wiping away tears from her cheeks even as more fell. “I didn’t want to leave you,” he said, his voice properly shaky for the first time. “I said I would never leave you. I didn’t leave you,” he repeated like a mantra.
Like a lifeline.
“I left you,” Annabeth cried.
Percy shook his head. “No. Never.”
