Summary
Stancest is not, and will never be my headcanon. However, I recently came upon a Tumblr essay (https://theywerefireworks.tumblr.com/post/139611289653/game-set-match -thanks DropoutFailure!) that was captivating in its thorough outline of everything suggestive of Stan/Ford incest in canon Gravity Falls. It gave me pause, and compelled me to give a few Stancest fics a read and, to my great surprise, I didn't hate them. Many of them I found difficult to put down because they were so well written, and leaned into the internal struggles of the twins. But then I realized that they ultimately bummed me out. It seemed to me that all Stancest has a backbone of abuse, neglect, mental illness, shame, and all other things Stangst inducing.
This work is an exercise that asks the question: can you have Stancest sans Stangst? I suspect that as they get closer to the Science Fair, their shared journey will cease to be innocent and conspiratorial, and instead become one of the many things that drive them apart. In the meantime, I get to write my very first smutty story.
