He was entirely sure that his whole face had to be covered after the hours of fighting, but the fresh feeling of it still made him gag theatrically. “Oh my god,” Wemmbu shook his head, watching the body in front of him slump comically, “he really should have had a helmet.”

He doesn’t have time for this. If he doesn’t get the mace now, this kid’s friend will die, and he will never get his fight with Flame.
“Give it to me right now!” The lion shouts at the younger man, tugging intentionally at strands of dark purple hair and scraping shallow cuts into the soft skin of Wemmbu’s cheeks. Some stubborn baby fat still clings to them.
“Remember the lesson I told you?”
There’s a pause in which Wemmbu wriggles himself out of Mane’s rough grip. He watches in exasperation as the teenager forms new scratches along his cheeks. Purple blood beads sluggishly at the corners.
“Wait, please, what- what happened?” The teen murmurs as he frantically types something out onto his communicator.
Using his quick distraction, Mane sends a quick message from his own communicator.
You whisper to FlameFrags: Don't kill Egg. Coming.

Wemmbu let out a wet, shaky laugh that was half sob, the sound catching in his throat. "You're just saying that."
"I'm not." Mane pulled Wemmbu back into a hug, this time gentler, more intentional, more deliberate.
His hand came up to rest on the back of Wemmbu's head again, patting softly in that familiar rhythm that felt like coming home after a long journey. And when he spoke, his voice was warm and certain and full of something Wemmbu had been desperately craving.
"I'm proud of you, Wemmbu."

The room was a disaster. Not ransacked or destroyed, but wrong in a way that made Zam's instincts scream. Wemmbu's armor lay scattered across the floor in pieces, as if he'd torn it off in a hurry. The window shutters were closed tight despite the midday hour, leaving the room dim and stifling.
And there, curled up on the bed in a tangle of blankets, was Wemmbu.
"Oh, hell," Zam breathed.
Even from the doorway, he could see the fevered flush spreading across Wemmbu's paled purple skin, could hear the labored breathing that rattled in his chest. Wemmbu's usual meticulous appearance had completely deteriorated—his purple hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat, his shirt was twisted and halfway unbuttoned, and his horns, those distinctive horns that marked his inhuman heritage, seemed to droop slightly.
Zam had never seen Wemmbu's horns droop. He hadn't even known that was possible.
