Summary
In the chaos of the Day of Black Sun, before Zuko confronted his father and left to find and join the Avatar, Zuko wrote a letter to the woman he loved. A letter that broke her heart in the hope that it would keep her home and safe. It didn't work that way. Instead, it kept Mai and Ty Lee as ignorant of the true scale of what was really at stake as his new friends until it was almost too late, and denied them the chance to do the right thing because it was right. Everyone knows what happened next.
In the present, an unexpected romance between Mai and a man she had only occasionally thought of exposes the true scale of the consequences of that day. Consequences that threaten not just the survival of the Enterprise crew and Aang's friends, but the futures of four species. As the situation begins to spin out of control, Zuko finds himself once again at the crossroads of his destiny. Can he prove to everyone, even himself, that he still has a role to play in humanity's future? Or will he falter, to the ruin of all?

Summary
It begins, like most events that change worlds, with something relatively small. In this case, a shipment of seeds for Mai's aunt that was being held up by changing import/export regulations as the United Republic of Nations came into being. Mai's effort to resolve the issue causes her to cross-paths with a certain Water Tribe warrior that had fascinated her even when she was with Zuko. Even as she has to fend off people who still question her choices during the Kemiurkage Crisis
For Sokka's part, his efforts to help a woman he considers a friend unleashes feelings they had both felt were buried. Which would be bad enough, without the mysterious events in a town near the border pointing to a mystery beyond their own skies. Can they work out just how they feel about each other and solve the mystery of what crashed in the mountain's near Chen's Crossing at the same time?

Summary
There were a few small problems with the situation. The biggest one was the Fire Nation princess herself. While Princess Azula agreed with the plan and had no issue sacrificing her potential suitors to dragon fire, she did have an issue with the notion of being stuck in a tower as bait. She had better things to do.
So Azula did what all good leaders did.
She delegated.
That was how Mai found herself stuck in a tower guarded by a dragon. And she hated every moment of it.
Or, how Sokka saved Mai from a tower.
