Summary
Kon’s shoulders judder, but his hands only pause for a moment in their mechanical digging. Clark hears him puff out a harsh breath, and another rock clatters down, then skitters into the circle around him. Clark hovers just behind him, the snapping of his cape echoing like gunshots in the near-silence.
“Kal,” Kon rasps after a long, tense moment. He doesn’t turn around to look at Clark; he reaches out again, his fingers closing on a scrap of metal with sharp, jerky movements. Clark holds his breath. “You have to– help me dig them out. They’re trapped, Kal, and I– you gotta help me dig them out.”
Clark’s heart squeezes hard in his chest. Oh. Oh, Kon.

The containment unit strikes him across the temple, the side of the face, his cheek. He hears a crackle, a rush of white noise, dead air; the earpiece, caught at just the wrong angle. As for the container—this time, it breaks. And something, some strange pale dust, bursts free in a cloud.
The drug, he has time to think. It must be the drug, the first shipment. He came here to find it, secure it, refusing to waste the entirety of the fourteen hours he'd had left before the White Portuguese was due to arrive. But he can admit, if only to himself, that this wasn't exactly the plan.
