“You should get help,” Four noted as the bodyguard hissed in pain. “They say Manticore poison can kill in less than a minute. Probably closer to ten, with someone your size.”
The bodyguard stopped to stare him down. Its gums pulled back into a smile before it laughed, blood coating its teeth. The man limped, as much as he could, back down the alley.
He didn’t turn back to the plaza. Which can only mean he is more afraid of admitting someone got into the building. He can’t get any help going back inside.
If the punishment is that severe for members, Four can only imagine what horrors await intruders.

Emma, with scraped knees and a chipped tooth smile against a face stained with freckles. Emma who still raced her siblings to breakfast and pretended to lose. Emma, staying up for hours to learn the morse code in Minerva’s books, falling asleep in the library. Emma with burn marks on her calloused hands. Emma, auburn hair stained with blood, the smoldering house behind them still not quite burning as much as the determination in her eyes.
Emma who got into fights knew she couldn’t win if there was even a chance of saving someone. Emma, promising to strangers she had never even met, that they would all get out of this hunting ground alive.
I don’t care what it takes, Ray vowed as Emma grew colder by the second, so unlike sunlit days dragging him from the shade, with warm smiles and soft blankets and bitter tea and old books.
I won’t let that happen again.
I’m not going to let you die!

It horrified her, just how willing she was to destroy everything she’d ever been to please them. ‘How much more do they need from me?’ somewhere along the line became ‘how much more do they want?’
The person she had built out of nothing over these past two years seemed so insignificant now. The girl who had dealt with lonely nights all alone with no idea of who she had been or would ever be. The curiosity she had cultivated from somewhere in the remains of her soul, the determination she had dragged back from the depths of her mind— all of that work to make herself into someone she could be proud of meant nothing. Because Emma loved those strangers that were supposed to be her family more than herself and it was terrifying.

Mom is never going to hang those vintage photos she’s had in her family for generations over the mantle again and it’s all his fault.
Neither of them are going to get the goodbye they want and it’s all Ben’s fault. Nothing is going to go back to the way it was and there’s nothing either of them can do about it.

Alphonse’s ears were red with frostbite, golden hair frosted at the tips and falling over his eyes. The wind nipped at his running nose. He could feel his whole skull chattering against his teeth. His toes were already numb as he stretched, trying to encourage feeling back into them, still wrapped in thick wool socks and secured beneath the laces of his boots. He was still relearning how to tie his shoes, Winry’s old gloves soft against his fingers as he redid the knots.
Even shivering and drenched in snow with bones aching from exertion, Alphonse had never been happier to have the ability to feel absolutely miserable. Every painful moment was better than the sounds of grating metal against the plating of an armor he would never have to see again. No more echoes of a hollow body, only the crunch of his own feet against the snow.

“His name was Yuugo,” Ray says in barely a whisper, but his smile seems more genuine to Phil. “It says, I can’t wait to meet you.”
Even with their survival constantly in danger, they still thought of him. He wondered if it mattered that he had thought of them too. It was ironic that in all his life he had never gotten any letters from his siblings. Even if they never grew up, he now has something to remember the ones who did.

Zeytrix looked to the rooftops, the communication center for the planet looming above her with purple lights constantly flickering. The Galra towers cast shadows above her as she ducked behind alleys, frantically looking behind, ear perked for the scratch of metal on stone. It felt like a cage, dark purple metal splitting the image of the open sky now stained with smog and disgusting clouds of pollution. Every time her feet hit the bare ground she could feel the agony of something long gone… But she could also feel the hunger.
Now Zeytrix stands at the mouth of the cave entrance and feels a dread seeping into her bones. It had changed. They all had. Where there was once a call of peace was now wariness as if the tunnels themselves would swallow her if she ventured too far down. Their Balmera had died. That’s what they all had said. It wouldn’t accept the energy offered anymore after the Witch had come, purple lightning splitting the sky at the seams as it had given a final howl of pain. The sound still echoed in her ears, even now, running past the metal poles of steel holding the rock upright. They were living in a corpse now, she knew. Corpses didn’t demand from the living… But this one did.

Keith has never really like his birthday. Or anyone’s birthday. Or, as a matter of fact, any birthdays in general. At all. Maybe there was a time, long ago, deep in the back of his mind when he can picture dripping wax and candles, itchy party hats he was forced to wear and strong hands ruffling his hair with stubble and icing stuck to a face that looked just like his with dark eyes and a scar across his brow. Then he accepted an extended hand and got a horrible cake in the back of his throat that burned on the way down because he was too damn stubborn to say no to his brother and his awful cooking. But other than those happy moments he would never have again he just couldn’t force himself to be excited on a day he probably should be.
