Summary
PERCEPTION (SIGHT) [Challenging: Success] - That must be it, the bird, perched on the loose gutter of the tenement across the street and one down. It’s no bigger than your hand, with a black speckled body and a pointed yellow beak. Like a child’s drawing of a bird. The platonic ideal of birddom.
HAND-EYE COORDINATION [Medium: Success] - It isn’t the best angle, but from this distance you could still hit it through the eye.
LOGIC [Easy: Success] - Why the fuck would you do that?
Harrier Du Bois takes up birdwatching.

Summary
“There’s something wrong,” Orfeo says. He’s agitated, shifting his perch, beating his wings. “Where’s his daemon? I don’t sense it anywhere.”
Kim says, “Detective, where’s your daemon?”
The detective frowns, finally averting his gaze from Orfeo to Kim. His eyes, when fixed on Kim, are a direct and blazing green, made greener by the redness of the whites. Kim does not react at all, but it is a very close thing. “My what?”
And that’s how Kim discovers the detective from the 41st has lost his daemon.Bookmarked by GoodFrith

Summary
There are other things, too, that Kim recognizes, as Harry shoves them back in the box with shaking hands. A matchbook from the taqueria they often go to, because Kim likes the tacos, and Harry likes the enchiladas. A flyer from a jazz show Harry had dragged him to. The newspaper is, of course, the Revachol Times article on the big motor-carriage theft ring bust they’d done, the one featuring a picture of Harry and Kim posing in front of a stolen and recovered Favre 353S. Harry had pled and cajoled and whined until Kim had finally, as Harry had put it, “autographed” it.
“Harry,” Kim says now, roughly, “what is this?”
“It’s not what it looks like.”
“That’s good. Because it *looks* like some sort of-” *shrine,* Kim’s mind supplies. Kim continues. “-collection, of, of - things of mine,” he finishes, not at all satisfied.

NORTH COURON PUBLIC ACCESS WATERFRONT - Stop me if you've heard this one: Two cops walk onto a beach in the middle of April. They've only known each other for a few weeks. One of them has only known *anything* for a few weeks, and swimming isn't on that list. He's wearing a ridiculous, 20-year-old bathing suit, and the city around him is teetering on the edge of warm spring bloodshed. It will never again be the same as it is now. He builds a sandcastle.

Summary
HALF LIGHT - The suspect is going to raise his gun and shoot at your chest. The bullet will dance around your ribs and explode through your spine, painting the walls and the lieutenant’s jacket with blood red fireworks.
YOU - Why … am I not afraid, then? He is going to shoot me but I don’t feel afraid. Why?
ESPRIT DE CORPS - You know why, Harry.
YOU - I really don’t. I should be afraid, right?
LOGIC - No, no you shouldn’t.
YOU - But why?
LOGIC - Because he is not going to shoot you.
YOU - The realization hits you worse than any bullet could. The man is not going to shoot you, he is going to shoot Kim.
