“Well, have you considered that maybe I don’t want to talk to you?” Alarm bells ring in Mike’s head even as the words leave his lips. They blare red and noisy, begging him to shut up and fix this. “Maybe I don’t need you?”
Will rears back like he’s just been slapped. His bottom lip wobbles and his eyes are rapidly filling with tears.
His beautiful hazel eyes that are always filled with warmth and laughter and love – filled to the brim with sad, hurt tears.It hits Mike then, all of a sudden. He put them there. Will groans and looks up at Mike pleadingly. “Come on! Bread without anything? Mike, that’s like- prison food!”
Mike gives him an unimpressed look – mouth set in a thin line. “Well, then. You can handle being a prisoner for a day.”
“Ugh.” Says Will and moves closer to his boyfriend. “My boyfriend is so mean.”
“So mean.” Mike deadpans.

Mike’s brain short-circuits for just a moment before he shifts his hand so his fingers are wrapped around Will’s.
He looks up at him, confused and Mike gives him a sweet smile and a lingering kiss. “We can stir together. That way, we’ll both be making the chocolate.”Will muffles his squeal against Mike’s neck.
“God,” he says, his voice trembling with emotion, “you have to stop saying things like that. One of these days, I will get a heart attack.”

It must have been at least a quarter of an hour of him doing nothing but wallow in his misery when the phone rings shrilly. Mike picks it up at the fourth ring, tripping on his way to get there. He puts the phone to his ear, heart thumping with anticipation.
“Will?”
There’s a low laugh on the other side – voice deep and rich. It sounds like warm honey and morning sunshine. The pleasant rumble of his voice wraps around Mike like a security blanket, and he sighs in contentment.

Summary
Was…was Mike’s heart reacting to Will?
Mike isn’t looking at him. He’s staring hard at his cards as if he hasn’t seen them before, biting his inner cheek, and accentuating his dimple. As Will looks closer, he notices the pink shade spreading over the shell of Mike’s ear, the red emerging from the black curls like a rose sprouting from the earth.
Was Mike still nervous around him? Hadn’t they resolved that?
Will decides to test it. He leans onto the bed and rests a hand on Mike’s uninjured thigh, his thumb swiping side to side over the covers, and waits.
Mike's leg twitches into his hand, and barely a moment passes before the beeps speed up again, a rapid climb from steady to sprinting, and when Will looks, the blush has spread to Mike’s cheeks, his eyes unmoving and glued to his cards.
Oh. Will gapes at the monitor, the green spiking line. That's not discomfort.
Oh. He can have some fun with this.
Or: Mike, while protecting Will, gets attacked by a demogorgon. Guilt-ridden, Will stays with him in the hospital, forcing them to resolve the awkward air that has surrounded them for months, and, along the way, uncover some truths.

Before this, Will’s fears were confined to the Byers household. The cadence of his father’s footsteps as they walked past his door, weighed down and angry. The scattered beer bottles littered around the living room, warning him of the danger beyond the entryway. The quiet sobs from Mom in the middle of the night, when she thought no one could hear. The snarls and yelps from Jonathan as he took yet another beating meant for Will, and the tears that their father would call him a useless fucking pussy for.
After the Upside Down, Will was certain he was right.
