His skin pulls tight, and a vague ripple wanders down his spine, an urge to shift and protect searing as he stuffs it down and reaches in with two blood-slicked palms.
Dry patches of soft down catches and sticks to his hands, but more hot crimson also coats them as he gently lifts the pup out from beneath entrails.
A girl, judging by her scent.
Earthy, green - maybe a little spiced.
It’s hard to tell with so much of her blood intermingled with what he thinks must be her mama's and her other fallen packmate.
Distantly, he feels Tess come to hover behind him, her hand now braced firmly on the same shoulder she’d been tender with only minutes ago. “Is it still alive?” Her voice shakes and her scent shifts, turning startled and unsure.
The low whine and broken whimper that whistles out of the pup as he clears the protective curve of the two dead wolves says yes.
The pained twist and wiggle as she pants says that she may not be for long.
Christ almighty she’s little.
Ain’t supposed to shift this young, shouldn't be able to.

Rain runs along the brim of her Stetson, trailing the dipping slope of her hat before dripping from the sweat-stained, weathered felt and leather.
It doesn’t protect her much from the deluge that’s pounding down around her, the early spring rain heavy and strikingly cold, the mist of her breath intermingling with the hanging humidity as she stands still as stone, unmovable except for the stray shiver she can't fight back or force down.
She can't look away, couldn't if she had wanted to, not that she does. No, Ellie wants to stay right here forever, maybe lay down where she can see her own claw marks dug into the ground and let more her own blood meld with the dirt that’s turned into a muddy, crimson slop.
This is where she was supposed to die, she can feel it all the way down into her darkest parts. Call it destiny, fate, divinity; it doesn't matter.
Something was supposed to take her three days ago, she wasn't meant to leave this fucking field breathing, but for some reason she’d been spared while Joel was not, most of the darkened blood sullying the soil his and not hers.

Summary
Tony decided that he should start a club. Maybe he’d call it the “2am Therapy for idiot’s club”.
Tony always thought that he was the only one in the tower with a fucked-up sleep schedule, but then again he was surrounded by weirdos so why was he even surprised? His little 2am adventures used to be done alone, in the large empty tower with no one to see him. Now he found himself sometimes crossing paths with the occupants of the tower, and every time it weirded him out. He’d seen Steve many times around, Bruce was always in his lab at any hour of the day, Natasha was just Natasha, and Thor only slept when convenient. (He also slept naked and absolutely everywhere. Not that Tony noticed or anything.)
The one-person Tony had never met on his 2am travels was Clint. Tony just assumed that the spy was very good at keeping hidden, or he had an actual normal sleep schedule. He did seem the most normal out of them all, on a good day of course. So, to say Tony was surprised to see the archer out late was an understatement.
