No one had ever asked Tails if he'd thought the way he'd lived was strange, but even if they had, he would've said, "not really, no," all the same. His living arrangement could only be strange if he'd lived any other way before it. While he might have, at some point, for most of Tails's childhood, he'd honestly known nothing else.
So when life as he'd known it is turned upside down practically overnight, he doesn't know how to deal with it. He might have the brain of a genius, but he still had the heart of a kid. And that heart felt like it was breaking a little more every day.

The village was close to a few factories, so the further one walked into it, the stronger the artificial smell got.
(Not like Miles ever had a chance to walk particularly far.)
Still, beggars couldn’t be choosers, so Miles held his head up. West Side Island was his home just as much as the other mobians after all, no matter how many rocks other kids threw at him.or how Tails became homeless (literally and figuratively) in 5+1 format.

Summary
Sonic wasn’t too invested, but he could tell from the moment Amy got going telling them about the holiday that Tails was, so Sonic was invested by proxy.
The past stretch of time hadn’t been too rough in Sonic’s opinion, barring the last-second Egguy scheme, and Tails had been with Sonic for a few months shy of a year, not really enough time to have a ‘normal’ established, but either way, Sonic really wanted Tails to have a good day, and what he’d heard about christmas promised a good morning.
With this in mind, watching Tails try to hide his upset and rushing when they realized they might miss christmas had hurt, which only added fuel to Sonic’s determination to get them to Amy’s in time.

What?” Eggman snarls, snatching up the alarm clock on the bedside table. “It’s two-fifteen in the morning! What vile pest is trying to break down my lair door this time of night?”
“It’s Sonic the Hedgehog, sir. He appears to be in distress.”
Eggman freezes, his evil bunny slippers forgotten.
“...What?”OR
Tails is left unresponsive and very injured after a bad explosion in his workshop, and Sonic (totally not blinded by panic) takes him to Eggman’s base for help. Eggman doesn't know for the life of him why he lets them in.
