Will was an incredible best friend.
It was easy to lean back into the couch from his poised edge and let himself be swallowed, “too bad we broke up anyway.” Maybe it was a self pitying and selfish statement but Mike was feeling needy today. Letting the previous night alongside today's emotions take control was so simple, like falling back into a lazy boy with the TV lighting the evening.
At the tipping back into the couch Mike had retreated into the safety of his mind- that was plain as day to the onlooker. For Will this was dangerous as it was usually when the dumbest of Mike’s thoughts decided to surface.
“If only I could date you instead,” Mike’s eyes were lazily tracing the slight contour of old paint on the ceiling, “you’re perfect for me.”
Will and Mike are friends. Best friends. Both of them are determined to fix their broken relationship when the Byers family moves into the Wheeler household after the "earthquake." Except they've both grown up since the Byers moved to California and things are different- really different.

Hello!!! If you’re like me at all, you’re just about ripping your hair out waiting for season five to release. I AM WITH YOU.
Since this is such a non-issue to those not chronically online, I’d like to invite those who need to touch grass (just like me) to follow me every day as I post about things that keep me up at night.
I’ll likely post one chapter a day, where I discuss stranger things and whatever I want because I feel like I’m going crazy waiting for the season to release!!

Summary
After the fight with Vecna, things are starting to look up as they start to head out - but then Will collapses, having been badly injured during the fight. Mike is forced to do CPR as he desperately tries to save the love of his life, and as he does it, he thinks about the past.

“Huh? Oh, yeah. Your family was never really religious, right?”
Will shook his head. “Nah, not really. I mean, I might have gone to church when I was really young, but I don’t remember all that well.” He cracked a smile. A genuine one this time. “I know for a fact, though, that I've never been in one of these things before. How does this even work?”

“Please, Will! Your drawings are amazing, you have to draw me! You have to!”
“I’m afraid you won’t like it”, Will said, continuing to color in the purple on his wizard robe.
“That’s ridiculous! I’m gonna love it!” Mike got down on his knees, knocking a can of crayons in his movements. The can struck the floor with a loud bang and Will couldn’t help but flinch. He remembered how Dad had slammed the door shut the other day. He had come home from work late and seemed irritated. Will had stayed in his room, not daring to say hello to him.
“I BEG you!” Mike shouted. He took Will’s hand in his. “I will do anything! Show me mercy, Will, I will never be able to draw the way you draw! Please, please, PLEASE, make a drawing of me!” He shook Will’s hand.
Will chuckled. Mike could be so dramatic sometimes. «
In November of the year 1977, Mike has been Will's only friend for over a year. When he asks him to do a drawing of them both, Will isn't able refuse.

I said yes and we high-fived and then he never spoke to me again. Now, when creepy guys try to hit on me, I say oh no, so sorry, I’m actually dating a musician named Eddie. It’s technically true.

He wants nothing to do with his parents. He just wants to start over with a life of his own. The universe, it seems, has other plans. The only house he can afford within his budget is the old haunted Byers house. He's heard the rumors. He's heard the stories. He isn't sure if he believes them. That the ghost of Will Byers haunts the house. But there is definitely something in the house with him.

The invisible shoulder nudges him, and Mike wishes he'd taken the piece of paper to read what Will would've actually said, and then misses, more generally, Will's voice. His spoken word. Which is unfair - Mike's lucky he gets even this much, the cool brush on his arm, the creaks of his weight on the floorboards, the gentle drum of his fingers. Reminders. Will, inasmuch as he can be, is here, even if it will never feel like enough.
Sometimes — he never tells anyone this — he shuts his eyes, tells himself that Will is alive, and sitting there, next to him, and the moment he tilted his head, they'd be face to face.
He doesn't like opening his eyes, after that.
Will is a ghost. Mike is haunted.
