“Change can be scary,” Buck says, “but we want your dad to be happy. Adults can get lonely too sometimes. He has a lot of friends at work, but he might be looking for someone who...can be a partner. Someone who worries about him and supports him when he’s feeling sad. Someone who loves him.”
“But he already has you.”

Summary
“I’m not even in the neighborhood of mad,” he says, instead of vomiting any of the thousand feelings warring inside him. “But Buck. This would’ve—this took you hours.”
“I’m good at multitasking,” Buck says, and Eddie can practically hear him shrugging over the phone. “I did all the cooking after I put Chris to bed, and then I got up a little earlier to get the cleaning and laundry done. It was nothing.”
Eddie’s starting to suspect he’ll have to wait for Buck to come back to make him understand that, actually, it kind of was everything.

Summary
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Bobby,” Buck bites out. “He took three months off. Saw a physical therapist. Did a few sessions with Frank. Clearly, he’s doing great.”
Bobby chews his lip. “If you’re sure,” he says finally. “He just looked a little off at that car crash, is all.”
“I would have noticed,” Buck insists. “It’s Eddie. I would’ve noticed.”

Summary
Mr. Diaz’s eyes are so infuriatingly brown, a roasted chestnut that feels lodged in Buck's throat. In certain flickers of the candlelight, they appear hazel. Another flicker, another color. Caramel, then gold. Buck doesn’t think he’s seen eyes like his before.
“So, what do you recommend? I mean, to encourage affection,” Mr. Diaz hastily elaborates, his eyes briefly shooting over towards Mr. Han before returning to Buck, almost as if he's been caught doing something he shouldn't.
With a grin so wide his cheeks nearly hurt, Buck answers pleasantly, almost saccharinely. “Dancing. Even if one’s partner is barely tolerable.”
A flash bolts across Mr. Diaz’s face, as the recognition of his own words repeated back to him lands with a satisfying crash, his mouth parting slightly as his shoulders drop, like all air escapes him, all because of Buck.
***
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single father in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of partner.

Summary
“Hi, I’m Buck, a firefighter with the 136,” for now, the thought crashes through Buck, leaving a sour taste in his mouth. “Uh, you’re both welcome to take a tour with us, if you’d like.” Buck awkwardly scratches at his neck, running a hand through his hair, unsure what else to do, and it spurs the man in front of him to take a large step forward up to Buck’s bed.
“Eddie,” he says, thrusting a hand to him, and Buck reaches over without a second thought. His whole palm feels electric, it smarts and carries the touch of Eddie, Eddie, that Buck feels it completely. He has no idea what’s happening to him. “Edmundo Diaz, but just Eddie though, uh, no one calls me Edmundo. Right. I’m a new nurse here, at Cedars-Senai. Oh –”

Summary
Buck looks at Eddie, for the first time in eight years. The changes in his face aren’t as drastic as they were for Chris – Eddie didn’t have puberty to get through. But his age shows, in the crows feet around his eyes and the slight frown lines. Before he left, Eddie was still in shape for working in the LAFD. Eddie looks – softer. Buck has no doubt he’s kept up with his fitness, but being CPAT-ready is a different deal.
And despite himself – Buck thinks Eddie looks good. It’s like a pang in his chest, when he finally lets himself acknowledge it. Eddie is older but just as handsome, even though he looks as awkward as Buck feels. His traitorous heart does a little flip, like there’s a chance of anything happening.
or: Buck hasn’t seen Christopher Diaz in eight years – not since his dad moved back to El Paso, breaking Buck’s heart in the process. He’s surprised Christopher wants anything to do with him when he moves back to Los Angeles for college, but Christopher is adamant on reconnecting. But with Christopher comes Eddie, and Buck has to contend with the fact that he never got over him.

Summary
Eddie listens to the voicemail later. Buck sounds like he’s at a grocery store, absentmindedly talking into the phone. “Oh, I guess you’re with your sisters. Sorry to miss you. I just wanted to tell you about this call we had last night, but I gotta hear your reactions, so, later. Okay, uh, I guess I’ll just call back. Or text.”
It ends abruptly, without a goodbye. Eddie replays it a second time, closes his eyes as he sits in the truck. For a moment, he can pretend Buck is sitting in the passenger seat next to him. For a moment, Eddie is back in Los Angeles and his best friend is dragging him through the grocery store.
The voicemail ends, Eddie opens his eyes, and the fantasy breaks. Eddie is still in El Paso, parked in front of the house he’s renting, and there’s no one in the passenger seat with him.
Eddie moves to Texas. Buck moves into his house. There's a love story somewhere in here.

Summary
“Seriously, the second I get back, you’re the one running off?” Eddie asks as he steps up to Buck. Their shoulders bumps together and Buck does his best not to flinch, from the words or the sudden contact. He’s unused to having Eddie around. The months of distance seems to have overwritten the years of familiarity. “You couldn’t have given me a settling in period?”
Buck should joke back. That’s what he does, matched Eddie, because the two of them have been in sync for years. He can’t though, because Buck has been knocked off the track, spiraling out of Eddie’s gravitational pull, and he’s not sure how to get back on. If he even wants to get back on.
Buck transfers out of the 118, gets a new apartment, and tries to pretend he isn't in love with his best friend.

Summary
"So," Pepa says without missing a beat, her crow's feet sinking their talons into the delicate skin around her eyes as she smiles beatifically at him. "You love him. What are you going to do about it?"
Eddie's brakes come to a screeching halt again, proverbial smoke coming out of his ears. "I…hadn't got that far."
Right. "I mean, uh, tell him…eventually?" Eddie guesses when Pepa doesn't respond to him and instead stares at him like he's just started speaking Pig Latin.
"Ay," Pepa says in an exasperated little huff. "We used to have romance."
Pepa teaches Eddie how to woo Buck. Buck doesn't quite get the picture.

Summary
They’ve been texting and talking for eight days now, Buck is absolutely infatuated with the guy, and he’s also—terrified. On some level, he knows Eddie must be conventionally attractive; he’d dated (or just slept with) Ben, after all, and Buck knows that Ben has a type. But he’s more than a little worried that he’ll look at Eddie and not feel anything, and then he’ll spend the entire eleven hour flight freaking out about it.
He stares down at his phone, flips over to his messages and scans through them. It’s just after midnight back home, which means that Maddie’s asleep, and she’s the only one who really knows about Eddie, so he can’t even attempt Hen (who, unlike Chim, would immediately reach out to someone she knew at another station to get every last bit of information) or, God forbid, Ana, who might actually kill him for jumping from Ben to Eddie so fast.
But on the off-chance she wouldn’t—she would definitely call him a coward for not picking up.
He calls Eddie back.

Summary
Eddie is thrown in to the deep end on his second shift at the 118, when an earthquake hits lower Los Angeles.
It is at a collapsing Heat House that he encounters a pregnant, heat-crazed, male omega, who kicks and fights with all he has left as Eddie rescues him. Buck.
Six months later, the US government starts a campaign to provide decorated war veterans with a reward for their service, and Eddie is left shocked to find a far more docile- and notably babyless- Buck kneeling at his front door.

Summary
And all of that was why, on their seventeenth day on Mars, Buck had shoved Eddie out of the way during the emergency evacuation, knowing it meant his own death instead of Eddie’s. Buck trusted Eddie to help get everyone else home, and Eddie had someone to go home for. Someone who needed him and loved him. Someone who Buck loved, even without ever meeting. He wasn’t going to let Chris grow up without a father. So in the split second he had to think after seeing the communications dish flying at them through the storm that was chasing them off the planet fourteen days early, he’d pushed Eddie out of the way, hoping like hell it would be enough and knowing he wouldn’t live long enough to find out.
--
Or, when their mission to Mars goes wrong, Buck gets stranded and the rest of the crew does everything they can to save him. | Fic is complete at ~120k words and posting 2-3x a week as I edit.

Summary
Bobby died and Eddie left. Bobby died and Eddie left. It was like those words repeated in his mind over and over. Nothing was the same any longer. The thought of working at the 118 made Buck feel like his chest was caving in and he couldn’t breathe. Sure Hen, Ravi and Chim were there but the feeling of home was gone. Buck didn’t even know if he wanted to be a fire fighter anymore. He didn’t feel the joy or purpose any longer. The fire had burned out, no pun intended.
Or
What if Bobby really did die and Eddie did leave to go back to El Paso? What does Buck do when everyone leaves??? He packs up and runs away only to come back 3 years later. A changed man with a daughter. Will he and Eddie be able to figure their shit out and finally get their happy ending? Of course they will because this is my story and only HEA's are allowed. Though the first chapter is pretty sad so you are warned.

Summary
Eddie wants to scream. Eddie wants to talk to Buck. There are questions he should ask - Do you know when the bleeding started? How long has it been? How bad does it hurt? Are you injured anywhere else? There is a conversation he wants to have - If I leave you here I don’t know that you’ll be alive when I get back. There are protocols, in disaster situations. If you can only save one person, you save the one most likely to survive. Beyond protocol, you always fucking save the kid. Beyond that, it's our kid. It’s our fucking kid, it’s Christopher, and I am going to get him to the surface and in doing so I am going to leave you for dead. But it’s Buck, and they never really needed words to talk, and Buck is still looking at him, and Eddie knows what he'd say. He'd downplay the injury. He knows the protocol. And he’d already said it, damned him out loud, he’s going to take you back up top and then come back for me.

It's a pretty graceless confession but last Eddie checked it was 87° and, as a reminder, 3:46 in the goddamn morning. Whenever he'd occasionally let himself imagine this moment it had been a lot sweeter, maybe candles, maybe flowers, a big emotional recounting of exactly how much Buck means to him and how much his life has changed for the better because he's in it, but Eddie really thinks he should be cut some slack given the circumstances.

Summary
One thing about Eddie Diaz is that he does not believe in the universe, destiny, fate, or whatever you like to call it. Especially when it comes to love. He did once and learned his lesson the hard way. No amount of every pot has a lid; you’ll find someone when you stop looking, or other platitudes from his Abuela could ever change his mind. And trust him at almost 45, he’s heard a lot.
So yeah, with a failed marriage, two disastrous (straight) relationships, a whole bunch of (gay) first dates, and one glorious (but very short) gay relationship under his belt, Eddie Diaz does not believe in fate.
That is, until he crosses paths with one Evan Buckley on a bright Tuesday morning, some time in February.
It goes something like this.or
