The shape of a man takes a familiar form the closer he gets, but also foreign in his haggard state. And there is a touch of death to him, a smell of decay only the arcane can bring upon a person, and yet the first words out of his mouth are, “Viktor, are you okay?”
If Viktor could get his construct to laugh, he would probably be laughing now, the miserable kind that might bring with itself tears. But he doesn’t remember how to do any of that.

Hannibal sat up, groggy from sleep and confused as he looked around. He was not in a hospital bed, nor the narrow cot of his prison. Or any prison for that matter. The bed was familiar, as was the room, because once they belonged to him before the machine of time and unfortunate events turned it into a walk-in museum for curious tourists.

“Gustave gets eye strain from arcane journals. As I have told you,” she teases. “Such things tend to happen with age. You’ll have to grow used to it, now that you’re mortal like the rest of us.”
Age is always a strange topic for them. For everyone in the city. Verso no longer dyes his hair, and silver spills forth with every wash. His beard is salt-and-pepper. Lune longs to join him in that. Visible signs of age fills her with triumph. A satisfying sense of spite, even.
