Summary
In 1689, Hob Gadling and Dream meet once more, after Hob has lost everything. That night, their meeting goes on longer than expected when the conversation turns to what it means to live, to lose, and to be the fathers of dead sons. Unable to bear the thought of sending a man who so echoes Dream's own grief back into the night alone, Dream breaks his own rule and invites Hob to stay with him for a time, at least until he can get back on his feet.
The story of two grief-stricken, divorced, and widowed fathers to sons they lost too young truly seeing one another and there, at their lowest point, doing their best to put themselves and each other back together.

“Do you know the way to Canterbury?” the lord asks, and Hob nods.
“Oh, yes. It’s a few days’ ride, not more than three or four, by my memory.”
“Then you shall have three days to please me, Robert Gadling.”
In 1389, known mercenary and bandit Hob Gadling offers to escort a strange lord to Canterbury, and wagers that he can guess the man's name in three days.

Summary
Seven years of dreams. A rare gift from the Lord of the Dreaming, who is not usually in the habit of granting favours. When he sets out to bring a little comfort to a hopeless dreamer, Morpheus does so more out of curiosity than benevolence. At least in the beginning. Even an Endless's feelings are subject to change.
