Summary
“Stay safe,” he says, pressing a kiss to Waterboy’s cheek.
“See you after the shift,” he says to Robert. He then tilts the man’s face up and gently kisses his temple. Waterboy waves goodbye to him as he leaves. Robert stays frozen for a few seconds.
It was a tame kiss, much tamer than Flambae’s normal kisses. But that’s the thing that gets Robert. It was gentle, domestic, even. It was such a small action, but there was actual love behind it.
The kiss throws Robert off for the rest of the shift. Punch-Up makes a point of calling him extra quiet, and Prism asks if he’s ok three separate times.

“The fuck did you say?”
Herm hated that he was like this, that this was all it took to get him to bow his head and make himself small, that Flambae could’ve beaten him blue and Herm would’ve considered it fair. The confidence he’d been honing over the past few months reached only as far as the next altercation, the next hard glare of someone who knew exactly what he was.
A pushover. A doormat. A heap of snow that would lose its shape at the slightest nudge, and then had the nerve to be unsightly afterward.
“S-Sorry,” he said, because there was nothing else to say. His hand shook around his butter knife, stopped mid-scoop in the jelly. Like a small, frightened animal, Phenomaman had once said, and it was just as true now as it had been then. It was a miracle he’d lasted this long.
“No,” Flambae said, and from the corner of his eye Herm saw him turn, truly turn, to face him. “Where the fuck did that come from? Didn’t think you had that in you.”
