Summary
“Mr Bridgerton? Colin?”
He almost did not recognise her. She looked very different — pretty red curls bobbed fashionably; cheeks and lips stained with a little rouge; a day dress in a lovely mauve colour that made her eyes seem bluer, somehow — but it was her scent that threw him off. Now that he thought about it, he could not quite recall what Penelope Featherington actually smelled like (he had not seen her in years, after all). She was so often at Bridgerton House that all he could summon was the same lilac smell that his mother and his siblings bore, but of course there must be other notes he was forgetting.
Still, he was fairly certain she had never smelled like this: vetiver and geranium, sharp and green and floral.
Not a bad smell by any means — just not Penelope’s. Even though he could not recall her scent, he knew certainly this was not it. She must be wearing perfume. It befuddled him so much that he realised he had been staring at her silently for a lot longer than was polite, especially for an old family friend he had not seen in ages.

Summary
"Now," the boy (Colin, Colin, Colin) says, as he eases himself to his feet languorously, so he looms and teeters upon the wall. Penelope's breath catches in her throat — she stares up at him in frozen terror as he reaches a long arm out to snatch the top of the cherry tree, his body bowing elegantly into the nothingness of open air. One wrong move and he will tumble, she is sure of it. "Penelope with the Greek name and lovely face and hair like fire," (Penelope wonders if she might die from blushing), "if I throw you down some of the sweetest cherries from the top of the tree," (he begins to pluck and twist the green stems, the branches shaking precariously), "the ones the sun has kissed to perfect ripeness, the kind of cherries you have never tasted before in your life," (he pops one in his mouth and gives the rest of his speech pouted around it), "even as the daughter of a duke who always tastes the very best of everything — well, do you think you might favour me with a smile?"
Oh, she thinks (for even at fourteen she is decisive; knows her mind well). I am in love.
On the day she finds out she is to be married, Penelope falls in love

Summary
Everything that Penelope owns fits into three wooden trunks. Even with all of the yellow and orange dresses she had left behind, it feels odd to think that the summation of her entire life was small enough to fit into three wooden trunks that have been dropped off in the dressing room at her new home.
She is supposed to exit this room and be someone’s wife, and all she can think is that she cannot breathe with all of her things living inside the trunks. And what kind of wife, anyway, spends her wedding night wondering if her maid had packed the one wooden doll with hair painted red, just like Penelope’s. A doll she has not thought of in years, and yet somehow, its absence presses against her chest until she knows that she will continue to ache until she finds it.
