Michael didn’t look up. “I should.”
She crossed her arms, standing over him. “No. You don’t get to leave him. Or me.” Her eyes were red. Angry. Terrified.
“I hurt him,” Michael said, voice breaking. “I was supposed to protect him.”
Elizabeth’s voice cracked, “Then do it now.” She slid down to sit beside him, their shoulders touching.
“He needs you,” she continued softly. “And… so do I.”
Michael pressed his palms into his eyes, breathing hard. “I’m scared.”
“I know,” Elizabeth whispered. “Me too.”
