    Peter scoffs. “You’re being ridiculous. And don’t start fighting with me, you know I’m right. Lyla says you haven’t had a hot meal in three days, and she’s locked you out of the ops-core until you manage to eat and digest more than an energy bar.”

    Miguel could scream at him. A few months ago he might have, talons out in the cafeteria, fangs lengthened, voice booming. People expect it of him, and yet the impulse isn’t there, hunger is, hunger, and something else that keeps him seated, shoveling rice into his mouth while Mayday mashes her peas to mush and Peter looks on fondly.

    Then Peter looks to him, eyes soft, and Miguel focuses on eating.

    (Or, the pains of parenthood, a courtship in food, and the processing of grief.)
