Summary
Whether it was because of his bright smile, or his expressive eyes – which tended to beam and dart and flutter about like lively blue butterflies, alighting but briefly on every surface – or the contrast his glowing skin made to his raven hair… Arthur did not know, nor care. Sometimes it was one, sometimes it was all of them. But when he got to that point of reasoning, he forced himself to look away, and tried to think of something else.
The truth was, it was all a bit too much. Merlin was a bit too much.

Summary
Merlin smiled as he passed Arthur on his way out through the door, but when he stepped into the hallway, with his back safely turned, he let it drop. The smile had been for Gaius’s benefit only. Now that Gaius was no longer lying there watching him, but talking to Arthur—and for that prat’s sake, his apology had better be worth Gaius’s time and pain—there was no need to keep up the pretence.
The pretence that all was well. That Merlin was happy now, because Gaius was back and everything could return to normal, as though it had never happened.
But it had happened. For the second time since Merlin came to Camelot, Gaius had been held and tortured.
And it was all down to Merlin.
Merlin goes through some conflicting emotions after Gaius has been rescued.
