“What—no—I don’t—” Steve’s brain felt sluggish, stunned by the force of Billy’s full attention.
One corner of the Alpha’s mouth curled up in a half-smirk, almost a sneer. “Not so haughty now, are you, King Steve?”
“I—don’t call me that,” said Steve automatically, but it came out far weaker than he’d hoped.
“No?” Billy cocked his head like a dog, smirk spreading a little wider.
“Pretty sure I can call you whatever the fuck I want,” he breathed, gaze flashing blue and dangerous under lazy, half-closed lids. “And you’ll take it.”

“Hay, did you hide my fucking notebook?” Roxas yelled out, hoping Hayner could hear him from inside. Without missing a beat, he heard his friend chuckling—not from inside, but out of view to the left of the back deck, somewhere halfway between the cabin and the trees.
“C’mere, I’ll show you where I stashed it before I head out. Good luck getting it, though.”
Roxas huffed as he stood, opening his mouth to say that’s not fucking funny, all the notes for my next book are in there—but another thought had his words catching in his throat. It was a thought that made him freeze in place, his blood suddenly running very cold.
Roxas couldn’t see it from this vantage point, but he could’ve sworn he’d heard Hayner’s car pulling out of the gravel driveway and making its way down the winding dirt path at least fifteen minutes ago.

Verso's smile widened, and Gustave knew with crystal clarity that the universe had a sick sense of humor. His Friday night blues had just become his Monday morning colleague.
"We've met," Verso said easily, still watching Gustave with those piercing eyes. "Haven't we, Gustave?"
The use of his full name was deliberate. Not a question, not a tease. A claim. It landed in Gustave’s gut like a stone, heavy and cold, followed by the slow bloom of heat at his throat where the bruises still ached.
He was so, so fucked.
