Hello...I hope someone is listening.
Donnie's life is composed of two important factors: his academics, and his favorite podcast. His drive to remain at the top of his school and to get accepted into the most prestigious of colleges swallows up every aspect of his life until it's the only thing remaining, aside from his love of the one podcast that's been there for him when everything else has morphed and changed.
A deal to take more chances leads Donnie on a journey that he never expected to have. It's the type you always read about in books, but never the type you expect to happen to you. And it all begins because Donnie took a chance and simply said "Yes."

Summary
Most nights, Donnie didn’t sleep.
Most nights, Donnie was far too enthralled with one of the various projects that helped sum up to his rather mountainous total, eager to finish one just so he could hop to the next. Coffee was his best friend, and most nights, he’d chug cup after cup, allowing the caffeine to course through his veins and take up much more room than blood could even hope to take up. Caffeine gave him life in ways oxygen couldn’t, and while Donnie’s family and friends called it a problem, he called it normal because, for him, it was. And because of that, most nights Donnie would find himself in this rinse and repeat process where the hours of sleep were stolen away by trinkets and tools and coffee mugs that he couldn’t remember whether or not he washed and sleep was the furthest thing on his mind because he didn’t need it.
This was not like most nights, however.
Or: Donnie's trying to sleep for once, and of course, that's when he can't. Good thing he has many messages from his boyfriend he can look through to pass the time.

Summary
Sleeping was better than being awake, which was something he never thought he’d believe. He used to guzzle coffee like it was water, strengthening it with espresso shots so he could work well into the wee hours of morning and function throughout the rest of the day like a normal person while cutting sleep out entirely. Granted, his brothers intervened pretty quickly once they realized how frequently he’d been doing it and limited his caffeine intake (something he’d curse them about till the end of his days), but it was something he used to want to do.
Most days, now, he’d kill to never wake up again.
Or one time Leo was there for Donnie before the genius's self-destructive habits became permanent...
His teeth ached from how often he’d been lying through them, but anything was better than sitting through seemingly endless family meetings where everyone attempted to fix what they couldn’t.
...and one time Donnie returned the favor.

Luring someone to a position of vulnerability doesn't require the grandiose act of causing chaos within a big city, nor does it take the murders of hundreds, if not thousands, of civilians. No, all it requires is holding something, or someone, captive that is meaningful to your target. If a couple bones are shattered, or a couple people get stepped on doesn't matter. The results are still the same.

Donnie may be a genius—and he’d never let anyone forget that fact—but the question left him confused. “What?”
“Y’know, in the Jupiter Jim movies and whatever other shows Dad watches, it’s always boys with girlfriends and girls with boyfriends. It’s like a never-ending pattern without a chain break.”
Donnie was at a loss here. He’d expected a confession of nightmares, persistent insomnia, or dammit, even just frustration at Leo himself, but media analytics was definitely not where he’d thought Leo was going. “I mean…y-yeah, I guess-”
“There’s never a boy with a boy or a girl with a girl.”
Or: Donnie doesn't believe in twin telepathy, but he can tell that something's bothering Leo, and nobody else seems to notice.

It’s not even that funny. It really isn’t. But something about the way she says it rips a laugh straight from Genya’s lungs. A real, full-bodied laugh, the kind he doesn’t have very often. And he can’t stop.
Then something shifts.
His laughter cuts off with a sharp, wheezing inhale. Suddenly, his chest feels too tight, like a fist has wrapped around his lungs and refuses to let go. He tries to suck in a breath, but it’s like he’s breathing through a straw—thin, ineffective.
Shit.

Zenitsu falls to his knees, pressing a hand to the wound, feeling the hot, slick blood seep between his fingers. His ribs ache—he’s pretty sure some of them are broken from an earlier blow—and he can barely keep his head up. His vision is swimming, his ears ringing, and his body is betraying him at the worst possible time.
The demon chuckles, its voice slithering through the darkness. “Pathetic little lightning boy. I expected more.”
Zenitsu coughs, and something warm and coppery fills his mouth. He spits blood onto the ground, gritting his teeth. He can’t die here. He won’t die here.
His fingers twitch, trying to summon the strength for Thunderclap and Flash. He just needs to get to his sword. If he can reach it, he can—
His knees buckle, and he collapses fully onto the dirt.
Chuntaro flutters in frantic circles above him, chirping desperately.
Zenitsu swallows down the bile in his throat and rasps, “Go… find Dad.”
