When Pure Vanilla throws open the balcony doors and holds his staff aloft, the first thing he sees are the tree’s branches devoid of his feathered friends. It’s an unwelcome sight, a clear departure from their usual routine. Had something happened? Has someone drawn them away?
A flutter of movement draws his eyes upwards towards the roof; instantly, relief floods through Pure Vanilla’s jam. The flock is mercifully still here, perched above his head on a nearby rooftop. They are, however, strangely silent and still, huddled closely together while glancing between Pure Vanilla and the tree. Pure Vanilla follows their nervous gaze, peering into the branches as he holds his staff high –
Only to spy a long, lithe form curled in the shadows.

Before the Dark Flour War, when the Vanilla Kingdom was at its prime, every few years the citizens would host a grand tournament. Cookies from far and wide would visit for the chance to partake in the festivals around the event or throw their hat in the ring for the tournament. The prize for the winner of the tournament? To ask for the King’s hand in marriage, of course!
The tradition fell to the wayside as the war raged on, then was left stagnant while the kingdom was dormant. In the wake of the relatively newfound peace as of late, the current citizens of the Vanilla Kingdom have decided to pick up this old tradition once more, and to throw as big a festival as possible for its grand return. Invites have been sent out to every friendly kingdom, and as the day draws near and preparations are entering their final stages, cookies from all corners of Crispia and beyond are already entering the Vanilla Kingdom in droves, excited for the revival of an old tradition.

Shadow Milk Cookie had been keeping to himself— disguised as the young Blueberry Cream Cookie— when Pure Vanilla finds him and offers some motherly comfort of his own. As the evening goes on, Shadow Milk starts to lose sight of the line between "method acting" and finding genuine comfort in the cookie's gentle embrace.

Summary
Three brush strokes to the right. Two to the left. A hand smoothing over his forehead, sweeping his bangs aside.
Shadow Milk knows the pattern well. His hair is always brushed the same way, in movements that seem almost robotic in how perfectly they’ve mastered the repetition. The bristles of the brush always skim over his closed eyes with such care, nimbly avoiding anywhere they might prick or poke. It always ends with a few final touches, tucking any stray wisps back into place before the brush is set back down on the dresser before him.
Pure Vanilla’s hands smooth through Shadow Milk’s hair, coming to rest gently on his shoulders.
“There. Ready for the day?”
Shadow Milk does not answer.
Shadow Milk has not answered in a long, long time.

The room is too bright.
It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
With one sweep of his cane, Shadow Milk tears it apart.

Why having Sebastian see you like this was a problem, you couldn't find the answer (you could), but it filled you with dread nonetheless. You’d never been discovered in a state like this before and you weren't planning on breaking that record now. “Sebastian it’s fine, I’m fine, seriously, I’m,” The last word of your sentence before you cut yourself off raised to a whimper, almost like you were about to cry. Again. So much for growing a pair down here. Attempt number two, “I can deal with this on my own.”
Well. If that didn’t reassure you, it certainly didn’t do the same for Sebastian.
Or,
Dealing with the consequences of the Hadal Blacksite seems to catch up to you, finding yourself deeply injured, both mentally and physically. But you choose to deal with it alone, almost unchanging from previous times. What makes it different is the familiar shopkeeper that doesn't allow you to.

Summary
Your responses, of course, had been similarly pleasant and short. Truthfully, you don’t know why Kim writes to you at all, after what a tool you were when you worked together in Martinaise. It was as if you, all by yourself, had written the guide on “How to be the Biggest Conceivable Dick to Your Partner”. The summary: you had insulted, interrupted, and disobeyed him, taking advantage of every shred of Kim’s patience while you recovered from your attempt at thorough self-immolation. You whined endlessly about your personal troubles. You begged for money and drugs from random people. The coup de grace: you had, in addition to your zero tact, zero situational awareness, which, in the end, got Kim shot – along with yourself and six other people. You and Kim survived; the others weren’t quite so lucky.
(In all fairness, you, shaky and detoxing, were barely cognizant of the whole mess, and of whatever you and Kim had that might have approached friendship at points – but that’s really no excuse).
These days, it’s just hard to believe a full year had already passed.
