Summary

Summary
On Antonio's five year birthday. Mirabel sees all the cracks forming through the house.
She runs to warn her family, but as they return the cracks are gone. Immediately the townspeople turn on Mirabel and blame her for making trouble.
Only for an apparition to appear, warning them about their abuse of the magic. The ghost of Bruno Madrigal himself. Cursing the entire village.
There is of course just a problem with that... Bruno isn't actually dead. It's just that everybody really thinks he is.

Luisa gives him a thumbs up, lifts the hem of her skirt as she steps down from the lower rungs of the ladder. She walks along the outer length of the sukkah, the hutlike structure the family has been putting together on their patio over the past few days, and lets her fingers trace some of the embroidery that whorls across its wall.

Summary
Five years after Bruno started his self-imposed isolation inside of the walls of Casita.
He is not doing well, his mental health is in tatters and his body is on the brink of giving up. He's a shadow of the man he was.
This cannot go on. Bruno is deteriorating and if this is allowed to go on, he will be lost.Casita cannot let this happen! Something must be done. The family must be made aware and must help Bruno.
But can he be saved? Or is he just too far gone?

Mirabel accepts the slim volume, looking unconvinced. This is the part where she asks him if he ever thinks about gouging his own eyes out. She squints at a lithograph of the doomed king on the title page, his empty sockets weeping blood.

As with many unfortunate incidents in Bruno's life, this one started with a dead fish.
Or, rather, dead fish. Plural.
This is an important distinction to note, because it will come up repeatedly and without warning, rather like the smell of dead fish themselves.
