Maybe it was low self-esteem that told him otherwise. Maybe it was, paradoxically, the power of his own tenuous resolve, fortified by years of practice to save him from his own tendency toward cynical resignation. The knowledge that nothing worthwhile could ever be easy, that things which seemed too good to be true always were in the end. The only conclusion left to be drawn was that Mob was making fun of him.
