Centuries ago, the world was as it is for you. Humans hunting, animals living, and evolution expanding.
But, humans got greedy. They wanted too much, they used whatever they could find to get what they dreamed of—good or bad. They went to science, to alchemy, to the dead practices of their ancestors.And they paid the heavy price for trying to get more.
Now, animals run free, humans live in hiding, cities and towns overgrown and used by any—just not humans. The world has been taken over by a different race, humans and their new “rulers” living separate, one fearing the other. The rulers, the species that was created by humans, they were ones that never should have been possible.

Summary
After the events of Wild Life, Joel arrives in the Winner’s Lounge, where the previous winners reveal what—rather, who—the Life games are really for: the Watchers. Outraged and unwilling to just deal with this cruel fate, Joel refuses to associate with any of the others and keeps to himself while they await the next game. That is, until Scott (the only Winner who still makes an effort to befriend Joel after so long, despite Joel’s immense detestation), brings Joel back to the group just in time for the Watchers to stop by for a visit.
Disappointed by the Winners’ indifference (and, in turn, the staleness of their emotions), the Watchers strike a deal with them; the Winners will have three chances to get the Canary to join their ranks. If they succeed, the Watchers will let everyone go—forever.
But winning Ultimate Life is far from easy; the Winners will have to play dirty, betray their allies, and compromise everything they hold dear all while fighting their own emotional vices and playing by the Watchers’ twisted rules. Relationships were made to be tested, tears were formed to be shed, and sacrifices were born to be slaughtered, but just how much are the Winners willing to give up for a chance to succeed?

When left vulnerable and alone, even the strongest can collapse. Philip, on the other hand, is very well aware that he does not qualify for that title. Time and time again, he chose to flee, abandoning those he cared for and leaving them to die, despite his best efforts. And yet, all the same, he carried with him the remnants of their trust.
Just once, he wants to live up to that trust, to be worthy of all the things he had been given. Desperately, he wants to grow.
When his pain and despair are at their peak, and when the voice only he could hear was at her loudest, Philip chooses to open his eyes and uncover his ears.
So long as he can stand up straight, he can change even the smallest of things- even if he burns himself to ash in the process.
