Max suffers with her mental health. She considers her heart incapable of love, and isolates herself from community. She dwells in the darkness, unable of perceiving the light of humanity. Just then she stumbles across Lucas, her high school ex boyfriend, with whom she had parted ways 10 years ago when he'd left Hawkins. He represents everything she could never have. But Lucas relents, insisting on making Max feel things she hadn't felt in 10 years.
