Summary
“You don’t seem like a king.”
Arthur lowered the scroll onto his lap and peered over at the child, curious and maybe a little offended. “Why not?”
Merlin shrugged. “You don’t sound like a king, for one.”
“And pray tell, Merlin, how is a king supposed to sound?”
“I don’t know,” he muttered. “Strong. Powerful.” Suddenly Merlin sat up straight, puffing his chest out and pinching his face into a rugged scowl. His voice pitched low, sounding odd in his young body. “My name’s Arthur Pendragon,” he imitated theatrically.
Arthur couldn’t help his amused snort at his antics. “Wrong," he said, returning to the scroll. "A king doesn’t have to say his name, the people would already know it.”
Merlin smiled, a teasing gleam in his eyes. “A good king doesn’t,” he mumbled under his breath, obviously still intending for Arthur to hear.
“The only reason I don’t ‘sound like a king’ is because I have to put up with all your insolence.”
That gloating smile grew on Merlin’s lips and Arthur knew he was going to lose this battle. “A good king wouldn’t put up with that either.”

Summary
“Very well.” Annis looks back to Arthur. “You will have your trial by combat. However,” she says, “I will choose your champion.”
Arthur’s head snaps up. For a moment, he’s clearly uncomfortable, then his expression clears and he squares his shoulders. “As you wish. You have your pick of any one of my men.”
“Him.” Annis’ eyes do not leave Arthur’s. “At noon tomorrow, your servant will fight on behalf of Camelot.”

Summary
With another growl, the monster surges forward, pressing its full weight into Arthur and toppling his footing. They both go down hard with just the damaged sword as a barrier between them. Arthur’s arms shake with the effort to keep it that way, pressing upwards with all the strength he can muster to free himself. The monster barely budges, lips pulling back in a snarl that reveals a mouthful of half-sharp, half-dull teeth.
Through his panic, Arthur finally realizes why this monster seems so different from the attacks in the past. His gaze trails from the jagged teeth snapping angrily at him to the side of the creature’s face that isn’t covered in scales, to the side that’s so obviously and glaringly human.
Because the monster isn’t a monster at all. It’s something else entirely, some kind of cursed hybrid never before seen. Worst of all, though, Arthur finds that he recognizes the human face beyond the scales and fangs.
