Wangji stares at their uncle with some surprise. “You know?”
“Of course I know,” replies Lan Qiren sharply. “Who, do you think, asked me to take on Wei Wuxian as a pupil?”
“Know what?” Lan Xichen doesn’t know whatever it is Wangji and his uncle seem to know. He is currently shoving his robes into the wound of a god. Though he doesn’t think any revelation could be more life changing than that, Wangji’s expression makes him slightly nervous.

Summary
The Cloud Recesses Guest Lectures were held every three years for disciples between the ages of fifteen and eighteen. They had three purposes.
The first (and the reason it was hosted by the Lan) was to provide a shared baseline understanding of the core cultivation topics that underpinned every sect while not divulging clan-specific approaches.
The second was to create opportunities for friendships and alliances that would reduce the chance of war between the clans.
The third, and most important, was for the clans to replenish their bloodline by finding compatible mates with strong cultivation skills. In the last month of the lectures, challenges to test compatibility could be issued.
Wei Wuxian challenges Lan Wangji, sure that they are compatible mates. The Lan refuse to allow the Challenge.
They come to regret it.

Summary
Qiongqi Dao at the morning of Jin Ling's three month celebration:
Lan Wangji hurriedly jumped off his sword, landed beside Wei Wuxian and caught him when he fell.He screamed “Wei Ying!” and tumbled to his knees, his dying friend in his lap.
Wei Wuxian looked up at him, smiling with blood running out of his mouth and voiced a last low, “Lan Zhan.”
For Lan Wangji, time stood still, he could only stare at his dead friend and whisper his name again and again.
Blood from a horrid chest wound dropped onto Lan Wangji's white and azure festive robes and on the earth.
Two arrows in Wei Wuxian's chest protruded into the air.

Summary
Wei Wuxian had searched. He had searched amongst the 3000 rules of the Gusu Lan School, being careful not to miss one, and he was sure of it. Nothing said he couldn't wear a skirt.
Now, maybe you'll ask why he would do that ? I mean, it's Wei Wuxian, so it's a pretty good enough reason. But. It actually had a purpose. And It was driving the righteous and all-too-stiff Lan Wangji insane.
