Her presence is a warm and long-familiar weight that sways with his steps as he makes his way to the Hanshi, where Brother is no doubt awaiting his arrival.

Every single night the guqin echoed into the Cloud Recess’ clear atmosphere, breaking the curfew. Within the last three years, be it the height of midsummer nights’ heat or the coldest winter nights, Lan Wangji’s guqin would squeeze the hearts of those who could not sleep. It kept the light-sleeping elders awake, and the old people would curse the Sect Heir in the dark, failing to understand the Sect Leader’s indulgence for his younger brother. It kept Lan Qiren awake, fueling his guilt: night after night the old man painfully realized how pointless the near-death punishment he had inflicted on his nephew had been. It kept Lan Xichen awake, helpless to soothe his brother. Often, the Sect Leader would rise to meet the musician inside the Jingshi, or near the waterfall where Lan Wangji would try to hide at the end of a too-long day, shoulders bowed by the weight of the elder’s look. He’d sit by his side and lay a hand on the wounded back – the only person Lan Wangji let touch him aside from Lan Yuan.

Jiang Cheng, however, knows precisely where to place the blame for everything that went wrong… at the feet of his wayward Shīxiōng Wei Wuxian, and his whatever it is they are (because Jiang Cheng refuses to acknowledge that his brother is married to the man until there is a proper ceremony), His Eminence - the Chief Cultivator, Hanguang Jun, or one Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng knows he did nothing wrong, and if he is being totally honest with himself, he knows A-Jie would also agree. It was all Wei Wuxian’s fault. Why did everyone expect Jiang Cheng to apologize?
Or the AU in which Jiang Cheng’s careless treatment of Wei Wuxian leads to years of ostracization before he realizes he was actually in the wrong and apologizes to Wei Wuxian… for things…

Jiang Cheng snapped the book closed. He gripped the spine until his knuckles whitened. He stared back at the bookshelf that was filled end to end. He had to wonder if every single one of those contained similar talismans. He had to wonder if he was staring at the last years of his brother’s life all contained as snapshots within those very books. The thought was dizzying.
There was too much horror trapped within the pages of those diaries for Jiang Cheng to comprehend.

He felt Lan Xichen’s hand slowly raking through his hair, speaking soft sounds as if trying to console a small child.
It felt sickening, condescending.
Lan Wangji didn’t know how the sects could’ve done it, how they could have entered into the Burial Mounds and done what they did when they saw the inhabitants. When the only army they saw were the elderly and women, likely wielding gardening supplies as weapons.
It wasn’t even a fair fight.

Wei Ying has a lot on his plate right now.
It’s finals week -- which isn’t so bad. He’s never had to study much to do well in classes. But that just means that things are that much more tense with Jiang Cheng, who, as far as Wei Ying can tell, only takes study breaks long enough to glare at Wei Ying where he sits on the couch playing video games.
It’s not studies that have Wei Ying stressed out. It’s everything else. It’s the recruitment for the research trial he’s coordinating. It’s jiejie and her impending marriage to His Royal Douchebag Jin Zixuan. It’s the volunteer work at the palliative care facility. It’s Wen Ning’s worsening condition. It’s Wen Qing working herself thin to care for her brother and Wen Yuan. It’s the way Wen Yuan never seems to have enough food.
So, yeah. There’s enough on Wei Ying’s plate already, meaning it’s not entirely welcome when he comes home and finds a man standing in his bedroom. A man in extravagant white robes, a ribbon tied around his forehead, long hair gathered into a topknot, fist clutching a sword at his side, who asks him, “Where am I?”
