    A.D. MDXIX. Gian Giacomo Caprotti da Oreno, allievo prediletto di Leonardo da Vinci, ha lasciato da più di un anno la bottega e vive a Milano con la famiglia. Ormai quasi quarantenne, è tormentato dai ricordi di gioventù e dalla storia d’amore avuta col maestro. Salaì, questo il nomignolo che Leonardo gli aveva dato, non ha però sue notizie da molto tempo.
    Questo finché, una mattina di aprile, riceve una lettera da Amboise, Francia. A scrivergli è Francesco Melzi, il suo ex compagno di bottega, con cui non è mai stato in buoni rapporti, che gli intima di raggiungerlo al castello di Clos-Lucé: Leonardo è in fin di vita.
    Questa diventa, per Salaì, un’ultima, importantissima occasione per ritrovare il suo maestro e, forse, risolvere alcuni annosi problemi lasciati in sospeso. Ma c’è una questione ancora più scottante: il testamento. E Salaì non sa cosa l’aspetta.
