Vi slumped onto the opposite end of the sofa, letting her head fall back against the cushion. "I don't get it, Cait. She was nice. Real pretty, too. But halfway through the appetizers, she just... shut down. By the time the main course arrived, she asked for the check and told me I should probably just go home to my wife."
Caitlyn froze, her wine glass halfway to her lips. "Your... wife?"
"Yeah! I told her I wasn't married, obviously," Vi said, throwing her hands up in frustration. "And then she got all weird and said, 'If you aren't married to her, then you're obsessed with her, because you haven't stopped talking about a woman named Caitlyn for forty minutes straight'."
Caitlyn felt the blood rush to her face. She carefully set her glass on the coffee table so Vi wouldn't see her hands shaking. "You talked about me? For forty minutes?!"

Vi simply squinted. “Every month?” She said, then scoffed. “Cait, I haven't had one in years.”
Caitlyn’s head snapped up and her singular eye stared at her so intently that Vi supposed she might have sprouted a pair of horns.

“Those things are going to kill you, y’know.”
Sebastian startles, lit cigarette falling from his hands onto the grass below as he turns to see the source of the voice. The orange embers glow bright against the ground in the low evening light, and he curses, stomping it beneath his boot before it has a chance to set fire to the forest. “Yoba above, Sam.”
Sam grins. “Aw, did I scare you?”
Sebastian lifts his boot from the now-crushed cigarette, letting out a soft sigh of relief at the sight of the burnt-out embers. “Yeah, and nearly burnt down our whole town with it.” He pulls his lighter and the half-empty pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lighting the cigarette before stowing the items back in his pocket. Sam frowns. “You didn’t come all the way up here at 10 pm to tell me to stop smoking, so — what’s up?”

“Did you know,” Sam murmured, fighting off another bout of drunken giggles. “Did you know you have fire opals for eyes?”
Sebastian’s lips had fallen into a withering glower that only deepened at his words. “My eyes aren’t some gemstone,” he scoffed, feeling his face heat rapidly. “If anything, yours are frozen tears.” Sebastian weighed the next sentence in his mind before saying it aloud. What the hell, he decided, Sam probably wouldn’t even remember this conversation tomorrow.
“They’re the exact same pale, icy blue as your eyes.”
Sam's eyes lit up with recognition. “The one on your nightstand?” Oh. Sebastian wasn’t sure what to even say to that. Deny it? Admit that he loved sleeping beside the stone that reminded him so vividly of his best friend?
