“I got it from Athena.” Eddie seems a little suspicious now. Or defensive? His eyebrows are doing that crinkling thing.
Right, of course, Athena, makes sense. Okay, Eddie didn’t want to tell him at first, but Buck can catch up now. He can be so supportive.
“That’s great! Alex is great. So smart. So good at her job. SMART- get it? System-wide Mental Assessment Response… you get it.”

So, this is a mashup between Heated Rivalry and the NHL and 9-1-1. It doesn't really follow canon in either direction so suspend belief. Wholly inaccurate, highly unlikely, written because my muse is beating me mercilessly.
Also, Buck is erudite. Trust me.
If they're speaking Russian I've tried to italicize it for clarity.
This was inspired by https://archiveofourown.org/works/27243244 Evan Buckley aka The Machine. Read it, it's hilarious. I took the Russian background for Buck and twisted it for this story, the barest *kiss* so that my 'mash mash mash' together would run smoothly. In other news, vodka IS made from potatoes.

Mi media naranja. Half an orange, right? Like—two sides of the same coin, or something. A complementary coupla guys. A little silly, maybe, referring to a grown adult as a piece of fruit, but the sentiment is sweet enough.
“Hey,” Buck asks the girl beside him. “Um, Alba. She called Rosie ‘mi media naranja’. Like—half an orange? Is that a common saying in Mexico?”
“Oh, sure,” she nods. “It’s a pretty normal term of endearment. Cheesy as hell, but, well.” She gestures at where Eddie and the two women are sitting. Alba’s holding Rosie’s hand now. “When you’ve known each other that long and fit together that well… it’s just sweet.”
My most best friend. That’s what Alba said. That’s—well, that’s who Eddie is to him, essentially. And if what Eddie’s missing is a little affection in a language that feels like home, well. Buck can give that to him.
or, buck notices the lack of spanish terms of endearment in eddie’s life since his abuela died. so, he’s armed with what he’s been reliably informed is a totally normal thing to call your buddy. It's a bright neon orange, compared to the light purple it usually is. Buck underestimated how much the nyquill would affect the color.

Eddie squints at him, but does as he's told, taking a few experimental sips. Buck gives him an expectant look and watches carefully to make sure he drinks every drop.
"Okay, I put nyquill in your smoothie."

The thing about Eddie and Hen bonding is that he might not want to admit it, but Buck’s jealous. He’s achingly and overwhelmingly jealous. He’s jealous of Eddie.
He knows how it sounds, he knows what people think. He hasn’t even tried to raise it with Maddie, because she’d laugh at him and she wouldn’t believe him, and she’d ask if he was sure he wasn’t jealous of Hen. It really isn’t that.
Hen is special. Hen’s always been there for him, always been a steady and constant support like no one else.
The thing that no one seems to understand is that he lost Eddie months ago.

A week’s worth of stubble across his jaw and cheek, a strong nose, and the deepest, prettiest brown eyes he’s ever seen, framed by mile-long lashes. Buck’s breath catches. Buck’s not into men, but holy shit, if he was—he’d be into this guy.
Well. He is kinda into this guy. Well. That’s—
“I’m here with my kid,” the guy continues, throwing a thumb over his shoulder and pointing toward where a blonde-haired, smiling kid with red glasses and crutches is standing. The kid lifts a hand and waves. Okay. Even if Buck is into the guy—kid usually means wife. Damn. “He’s got CP. We’ve done this song and dance a thousand times. You want a hand?”
“Sir,” the man cuts in, “this is a private discussion—”
Buck, who really was trying not to cry before, feels like he’s fighting a losing battle now. His eyes are a little wet, and his hands, gripping his crutches, are shaking just a little. “Fuck. Yeah. Please.”
