Summary
Beatrice only made it three words into her introduction before everything went wrong. “Excuse me, sir,” Beatrice began. Before she could get to her actual message, Lemony's companions burst out laughing.
Lemony didn’t answer Beatrice. He stared straight ahead and took a small sip of his root beer float. The woman on Lemony’s responded instead. “Is there something this fellow can help you with?” she asked. Her smile seemed much too wide for that particular question.
“I’m sure Mister Snicket would be more than happy to speak with you,” echoed the man.
“He really is quite the gentleman,” added the woman to Lemony’s right. All three of them started laughing again.

Summary
Ellington was close enough for Violet to hear her every breath. Her grip on Violet’s hand seemed somehow more tender. Ellington’s smile was no longer unfathomable; not when all the other signals were clear. Ellington knew exactly what Violet was, and she was obviously pleased.
“In this world, you cannot avoid others’ attraction. You can only search for those that are less dangerous. Those who are willing to protect you. Those that you find more pleasing.”

Summary
Cigarettes were useful in many scenarios. They could be used as makeshift smoke signals to communicate with someone fairly close by. As part of a disguise, they could make a child appear much older than they actually were. Most helpfully, when dealing with a certain sort of adult, offering a smoke was a surefire way to gain their favor. Anyone who partook in cigarettes was always happier with one between their lips.
Of course, none of those were the reason that fourteen-year-old Kit Snicket first opened a pack.

Summary
Just a handful of hours before, Violet was curled up in Olaf’s trunk and worrying about what he did while she was under anesthesia. Now, she was plotting to violate Olaf in return. The very idea made her stomach turn and her hands shake, but did she really have any other choice?
Violet was the eldest Baudelaire. She had a duty to her siblings. Letting her rut loose on Olaf and claiming him was indubitably wicked, but it would keep Klaus and Sunny safe.

“What are you doing here?” Sam asked. Crowley always enjoyed sticking his nose in he and Dean’s business, but at the moment, there was nothing for him to pry into. It had been weeks since they tangled with any demons at all.
“I’m saving you a piss and five minutes of waiting. You’re up the duff.”

Summary
Duncan and Isadora thought they understood VFD, but they learned about it from books. Quigley was a volunteer. He went through an apprenticeship, even the parts that his associates didn't dare to write down. Even with the organization fractured and every safe place reduced to ashes, Quigley’s membership was sealed. His siblings didn’t suffer the same fate. They never would. If Quigley had any say in the matter, they’d never even discover what he had to do.

Summary
Georgina stopped cold. Her nose twitched and a light seemed to switch on behind her eyes. “Do I smell smoke?”
When Esmé concentrated, she could smell it too. “The Baudelaires told everyone that the hotel is on fire. Apparently they were telling the truth.”
“Esmé, have ever I told you that I always wanted to have sex in a burning building?” Georgina smiled wide.
That was exactly what Esmé was waiting to hear.

Summary
Sam doesn’t mean to be a smartass. It’s just that the last thing he read was De Profundis, and after watching Dean pour his heart out, he can’t get the words out of his head. Oscar Wilde wrote about devotion. That's what Sam sees in front of him.
“Love is a sacrament that should be taken kneeling,” he recites.

Summary
The motel room shifted and blurred until its walls were a pure alabaster white, and the mustard curtains and bedspreads turned into gold detailing and trim. The dresser transformed into a long marble table, and the bed into ornate, embroidered chairs.
Behind Dean echoed an all-too-familiar voice. If he stopped to think for even a minute, Dean could have guessed who was behind it all.
“Hello, Dean. What a fascinating scene. I haven't seen something like that since the days of Lot.”
Dean turned around, and there was Zachariah, as stiff and smug as usual. Dean should have known it was angel bullshit. He shouldn't have trusted a thing.
“We needed to keep you out of the way until midnight tonight. I figured you'd enjoy a reunion B-plot a lot more than the alternatives.”

Summary
Sam didn't have to feel so gangly and hulking and awkward, buried in his own broad shoulders. It was possible to slip out of his masculine costume and feel smooth, lithe and beautiful. He didn’t do it often, and he certainly never transformed completely—it was impossible to notice that a bra stuffed with gym socks didn't sit on his chest the same way as actual breasts—but for a few stolen hours at a time, Sam had felt whole.
But Sam didn’t own a bra anymore. It burned in the fire.

Dean could see why Sam liked her. Jessica was hungrier than any monster he’d ever seen. The second Dean explained everything, she grabbed one of his guns. The first time Dean took her on a salt and burn, she lit the match herself. Sometimes, when they were in the basement of some old building and the musty air was getting to him, he swore she looked like his father. Jess wasn’t a Winchester, but the family temperament ran in her all the same.

Summary
Dad felt sorry. That was the important thing. It took months, but he figured out that he fucked up. After a few shots of whiskey, he would even admit it. Not in words, of course—being that straightforward was never Dad’s style—but he apologized just the same.

Summary
Jess knew the exact day that it happened. When she went to bed on November second, 2005, everything was fine. On the morning of November third, she woke up dead.
Everything stayed the same. She still showed up to her classes. Her grades didn’t fall. At work, she went through all the motions of stocking shelves and checking out customers. Sam proposed that year in a cute little Italian restaurant that looked out over the bay. She got into UC Law San Francisco.
It was just that Jess was hollow. It was like somewhere along the line, she put herself down and forgot to pick it back up. There was only a shred of her left, haunting an empty husk.

Summary
There was just something about humans. They had all the wit and capacity of mystical beings, but they were so much more real. They breathed and ate and shat and slept just like every other animal. Their clothes got messy. They broke and bled. Sometimes, they even stank to high heaven. They couldn’t undo any of it with a snap of their fingers. They had to actually take the time to fix things. Every little thing took actual work, and they spent a third of their lives completely asleep, yet still, they had creativity that his brethren could never dream of.

Summary
Sam’s brain always played tricks on him, but this was a new low. He came all the way to Ohio, took a tech support job, of all things, then dragged a coworker into a hunt through their cushy office. Sure, Sam did a few strange things back at Stanford, but he didn't uproot his entire life.
There was no way that was actually Dean, was there? Sam hallucinated his brother’s face on some poor civilian and pulled him into the life without even thinking. Hunting was the toughest job Sam could imagine, and he forced some pampered desk jockey into it just because he had the same name as his brother—if the guy was even called Dean at all. Sam probably made that up, too.

“All I’ve done this whole time is talk about myself," Cassie said. "It’s your turn. Tell me something about you.”
“Like what?” Dean already made it pretty damn clear that work and family were off the table. There wasn’t much left.
“How about your friends?”
Cassie smiled when she asked. She had no idea it was a loaded question. She actually thought Dean had friends.

Nearly four years had come and went, but God, that was still John's kid. He wasn’t exactly the same—less skinny, more tan, and just a hair taller (or maybe John was just shrinking)—but he was still Sam. He wasn’t the boy with demon blood, not the potential Antichrist—just Sam. For the first time in years, John didn’t see a monster in the place of his son.

Summary
People were kind enough to put down dogs. Hell, John did the same to plenty of newly-turned vampires, werewolves, and rougarous. It was merciful to end things before they saw what they’d become. Sam was a sweet, thoughtful kid, even at seven. It was better if he didn't know what he’d turn into when Yellow Eyes came back.
