Embarrassment burned hot. Shane’s face flushed. He glared at Ilya, a look that said back off.
Ilya’s jaw tightened. He stepped back and put his hands up. “Okay.”
Shane stared Ilya down, maintaining eye contact as he defiantly chugged the remainder of the beer in his hand. Ilya fought to keep his expression unchanged, not wanting to feed into any drunken game Shane might be trying to play. He stood quietly, a few steps away.
But he watched. He always watched.

Ilya is struggling while Shane is on the road with the Metros, and the distance, combined with a brutal depressive episode, leaves Ilya spiralling. When everything becomes too much and the intrusive thoughts won't stop, Ilya takes Anya for a walk - and somehow ends up at Shane's parents' house.

Ilya gazed at the photo, not bothering to conceal his obvious delight.
It struck Shane suddenly that he’d never seen any photos of Ilya as a child. Had never seen what he had worn on his first day of school, never seen the gap-toothed primary school days. He wondered if his hair had used to be lighter. If his mother had held his hand tight on his first day at school as well.
